DENIM DARE – The Search To Find Jeans That Fit Curves

Phase I – Information Gathering

This weekend Glasgow and I attend the ENK Coterie trade show at the Javits Center. There participating were numerous well-known fashion houses like Halston, Theory and Tracey Reese as well as several premium denim lines. Seizing this rare opportunity, Glasgow and I decided to explore which, if any, denim companies had jeans that “fit” a woman blessed with hips and another blessed with thighs and a derriere. We randomly selected four brands to explore. They are listed below in no particular order.

First stop, Adriano Goldschmied (AG); AG is synonymous with great quality denim, design and state of the art washes. This year, AG launches a revised version of its popular Curvygirl-friendly and universal fit jeans called the Jessie. The Jessie is a bootcut jean hailed to “fit” a woman with curves. It has two way stretch, 3% Lycra, a waist that curves in and extra room in the thigh area and will be offered in sizes 24-33. The Jessie will be replacing the “Club” Jean, a well-fitted flare that Oprah hailed as her “perfect pair”

AG Denim also features other great fits like the Angel (another bootcut), Jeggings (denim leggings – shown directly below) and the Stilt (an ankle-length skinny jean – shown below)

My new obsession has to the the tights – a denim legging with an elastic waist – if that doesn’t scream comfort, I don’t know what does. They caught my eye because Alissa from AG Denim was wearing a pair as she was walking us through the line

Our next stop CJ by Cookie Johnson. Cookie Johnson, wife of the Los Angeles great Magic Johnson, launched a line of fashionable jeans for women with curves. “Cookie Johnson Jeans are the product of Cookie Johnson’s partnership with Michael Glasser, founder of 7 For All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity.” Like AG Denim, her jeans have found a fan in Oprah and she was featured on the show in October of last year

Here is Cookie explaining the essence of CJ by Cookie Johnson.

On to “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans” “NYDJ”. “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans” celebrates the beauty of women who know who they are and know that they don’t need to impress anyone but themselves but still want to wear great looking jeans. These jeans are said to be both comfortable and stylish – we both agreed they are stylish.

Last but not least was Bleuology Denim, a brand new company launched days before the trade show; it’s been a hit with retailers and will be in stores sometime in June. Bleuology Denim designs reversible jeans! That’s right, reversible jeans! What an interesting idea? Now, one can go from day to night simply by turning the pant inside out without anyone knowing it’s the same pair of jeans!

Watch Owner/designer, Carl Jones show us the beauty of Bleuology

For those of you old enough to remember, Carl launched the highly successful line Cross Colours in 1989. I will admit, I had one or two Cross Colours pieces (smile)

Phase II of the Denim Dare will entail product testing. Will we, a woman with hips and a woman with a derriere and thighs, find jeans that fit their “so called” problem areas and, most importantly, the waist? Stay tuned……
