I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but my friend Dave is a sneaker whore. I mean he REALLY REALLY is into sneakers. I would go so far as to call him a collector. When this Nike Playmakers event came up, he was both very anxious and excited. Dave even had me scout sneakers for him in Tokyo (take a look at the ones he had me pick up for him – the Olive and the Silver)
Anyway, back to the Nike event. After we check in and head to the 5th floor where the actual event is, the first thing we notice is this display and that’s because dear David, sneaker freaks of all sneaker freaks is craving one of these sneakers.
Here’s a closer look at the pair he wants (and eventually gets). According to Dave, this is part of a Limited Edition Shoe series Nike did for a the Doernbecher Foundation, a Cancer Charity. The shoe is an Air Jordan 1 Retro High designed by Tony Taylor aka Mr. Boober (I told you be is a sneaker freak)
Here’s a photo of Dave with the shoes. He’s smiling because he was told there’s a chance he might get a pair after all. If any of the people who pre-ordered them don’t pick them up by then time the store closes on the date of this event (which was Wednesday), he can com and get them the next day (if hi size is available). Nike opens at 10am, he was the first one standing online the next day waiting for the store to open. He wears a size 10 or 10 1/2 but they didn’t have those, so he walked away (very happily) with a size 11
I’m not the kind of girl you’d normally find in Nike or any other sneaker store for that matter. I only wear sneakers when I go running (and I’ve gotten a bit lazy with that) but this wall mural/painting really caught my eye. Most people who know me know I love color, so none would be surprised that this got my attention. There’s something about it that just jumps at you.
Anyway, the invitation for this event stated stadium style hors d’oeuvres and they weren’t kidding – they had mini burgers, pigs in a blanket, fat hot pretzels that were very thick, chicken fingers, popcorn, etc. but those weren’t the only delicious treats at this event
We stayed at this event for quite a while, (Kim joined us here later about an hour after we got there) longer than we should have because we had another to go to at the Bowery Hotel – we got there too late and they said the doors were closed. We did have fun listening to DJ Just Blaze fire off some great music.
As I said we missed out on the next event, so we went home. Until the next event(s)
