4th Annual Slovak Fashion Night

The Consulate General of Slovakia in New York and the Slovak Commercial Office under the patronage of the Slovakia’s State Secretary H.E. Mrs. Olga Algayerova, came together to put on the 4th Annual Slovak Fashion Night benefitting the YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities – Autism, Down Syndrom, Cerebral Palsy, etc. Dave, Kim and I had the pleasure of attending. The event featured designs from Izabela Komjaki, Nikolo Bertok, Noriko “Nora” Somsedikova, American designer, Clark Sabbat, Jana “Lucia” Hejcikova, Andrea Paldan and Elen Russo , styled by Jana Fussekova and Ivana Marmare.

According to their site, the Slovak Fashion Night is the signature event of the +421 Foundation. Although this is the 4th annual event, this was the first time we attended. Held in the Grand Ballroom at the Bohemian National Hall , the event was a mixture of fashion, dancing and quirkiness I’ll explain later). We came late to the event so we missed quite a bit and many of the designers. We did notice that at the beginning of each designers showcase, a dancer performed.

As I stated, we arrived late, so we didn’t event bother with hors d’oeuvres or drinks. Quick note – The bar was sponsored by Double Cross Luxury Vodka, which you may remember from my post on the Harley Davidson event. The collections we saw were very clean, very chic. It was as classic as it was beautiful

My favorite pieces were these, as you can see, they are not the classic looks you see above. I usually prefer standout pieces in a collection.

but there was one that was captivating, much like a butterfly’s wings (Which is the first thought that came to my head when I saw it). The second photo of course is the designer of this piece

Anyway, on to the quikiness of the evening, while we were watching the last designer, in walks a man and woman. He was dressed in a full “realistic” Astronout suit and she as a milkmaid I presume. They proceeded to walk around the entire venue, so much so that the event host called them on stage to find out well……why? He stated that it was a performance piece and they’ve been walking all over Manhattan, especially Times Square noting people’s reactions. We never found out the ending results but you can imagine what they were. Check out the photos for yourself below……..quite an interesting end
