Alexander Berardi is very new to me. I keep an open mind and attend little known to unknown designer shows because sometimes you can really get some fresh new fashion ideas and creativity from them. I also took a look at his Spring 2010 collection and liked what I saw – very chic but simple pieces, very Upper East Side which is where he was influenced by. According to the press release, “Berardi became entranced with the thought of Marlene Dietrich captaining a luxury yacht. The theme of classic Hollywood charisma mixed with the charm of New England luxury runs throughout his collection of high-end women’s sportswear”
I wish I could say I loved or understood his vision for every piece because I didn’t. I’m not going to try to interpret what he was trying to say with this collection, just stating what I liked and didn’t – we all have different tastes. I’ll begin with what I didn’t quite get – the shirt dresses? I’m not sure if i can imagine Marlene Dietrich in these pieces. I know she loved a good men’s suit…….
They just looked like the models threw on men’s shirt because their garments were not ready. I appreciate the detail on the pockets on the second shirt but otherwise I wasn’t impressed with these at all. Now on to the pieces I did like, Berardi did much better with the more feminine pieces. All very chic and sophisticated. I loved the dresses and skirts with the very pretty draping that fell 2-3 inches above-the-knee
Berardi should definitely stick to the more delicate and intricate side of women’s fashion, the other side is too blah especially after that wonderful spring collection. I hope next season’s collection brings back the cool sophistication that was shown last season. I look forward to seeing more of the Spring 2010 version of Alexander Berardi for Spring 2011 – he does beautiful work.
