Nautica Fall 2012 Collection – Mission to Please

Nautica is on a mission. A mission to charm the same hearts that Sir Lauren charmed many years ago by making Polo into a certifiable household name. What David Chu started years ago as a delving into his love for fun & classic American sportswear, Chris Cox is now cultivating into a brand that takes the same honed aesthetic of American sportswear translated for a generation of men with less rules and greater diversified life encounters.

What strikes me as key about many designers with a keen foresight for greatness is their reliance on continuity. Continuity is key to establishing a lasting impression and follows a basic framework that can be tweaked here and there for modernity. However, it’s that continuity through construction, advertising images, quality and fit that leave a commanding presence on the minds of the consumers which they can recognize season after season while still moving along with a brand’s growth.

The in-store presence of Nautica is vast. That is the key to understanding Nautica’s approach.  They reach a lot of men throughout the nation with an aesthetic that is essentially and classically American. With this in mind, the brand doesn’t really need to reinvent the wheel every time at bat. What it needs to do and what it does well is connect that continual presence of triumphant sportswear with the essence of an American man’s way of life. This is why the brand’s past advertising images and the selection of the models for the Fall/Winter 2012 presentation all convey strong boy next door, quarterback, active American male personas that live in our minds and subtly make men seek out these kinds of clothes in their shopping escapades.

The collection Nautica presented during fashion week was littered with a welcomed and growing continuation of what the brand bumped up for Spring 2012. Color! Vibrant color is something designers usually relegate to spring to kind of imitate the foliage and sunlight while keeping their fall winter accessories more “springily/summerly” inspired. However, while sticking to its sportswear strengths, Nautica suggested that a broader consensus of men should create their own rules and pay homage to the brighter, warmer seasons in the grayer colder months of the year. Still this is also a business which exists to make a profit, so it still caters to those men who are slower to adapt to change by offering their classic staples of cable knit sweaters, wash & wear shirtings, loden coats, puffer vests and pea coats in classic American navies, varsity blues, collegiate greys and New England whites. My favorite pieces of the collection were the elegantly tailored heavier weighted wool blazers with a bit more shaping. Also of note were the modern shoes that took inspiration from menswear lore in herringbones and flannels in mute tones that leave the canvas crystal clear for the poppier tones of some of the outerwear.

Another good thing to note about Nautica is that since it does have a nationwide retail presence, intermediate deliveries will be peppered with color all throughout the season. This in turn sinks it deeper into the psyche of the male consumer that color is welcomed and OK anytime time of the year.

HoodieBuddie Loves Betty White….

….and so do we. Betty White has been a favorite since her days on the Mary Tyler Moore Show in my house (my mom is a huge fan), a statement I’m sure most of you agree with. The incredibly funny icon and legend is also a fashion favorite as can be seen on Hot in Cleveland with her ever present bedazzled sweatsuits, but did you know she was a designer? That’s right, Betty White has a new limited edition line of t-shirts and HoodieBuddies™?

As you can see, HoodieBuddie Loves Betty White, but then who doesn’t. Betty is also a celebrated animal lover, so a portion of the proceeds go to the Morris Animal Foundation. Although Betty’s rockin’ limited edition hoodies were sold out faster than you can say Golden Girls, you can check out new styles from HoodieBuddie at

American Eagle Spring 2012 Collection

For Spring 2012, American Eagle welcomes a happy mix of prints (bold florals, pretty paisley and tribal), stripes, mixed textures, striking color, bold accessories and swimsuits. The American Eagle Spring 2012 Collection is a wonderful mix of Farmgirl innocence and California cool and in typical American Eagle manner, also allows consumers to mix and match as well as layer the pieces.

Several looks/pieces in the AE Spring 2012 stood out to me, including the peekaboo shirt with the lace insert, the adorable colorful ikat skirt, the color-blocked striped tee and the modern lace tee

The 2012 American Eagle Swimwear collection, which showcased a lot of halter-style tops, also features lots of fun, girly prints

Accessories were both full of personality, colorful – mixing both the flair and subtle beauty of the 70’s – feather jewelry and fringe bags; pops of color added to bags by hanging decorations or stitching, beaded jewelry and ornate sandals.

BlackBerry’s BBM Ugly Sweater Fan Night Party with Michael Strahan

Wearing some of the ugliest holiday sweaters they could find, BlackBerry fans came together for the ultimate holiday celebration of all things BlackBerry. Hosted by Michael Strahan, adoring fans and video game enthusiasts attended the BBM Ugly Sweater Fan Night Party at Aspen Social Club in NYC.
Guests test-drove Angry Birds 3 on the PlayBook and new BlackBerry 7 devices, created ugly holiday sweater avatars and snapped holiday pictures with friends in the photo booth.
The main event began when Michael Strahan challenged a few lucky fans to a friendly game of Madden ’12 on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The competition was tough, but Michael, sporting his white sweater with snowmen and stockings, offered fans tips on how to defeat the master in his own game.

It was non-stop hilarious commentary, tips and tricks from Michael Strahan as each fan tried their best to win.

Fans who attended the event scored their tickets to the party, BBM’ing gloves and a new BlackBerry Bold 9900 through an online contest hosted by BlackBerry. To win, they had to submit a BBM Ugly holiday sweater avatar and tell BlackBerry via Twitter what BlackBerry product is on their holiday wish list. 12 winners won an opportunity to join a BBM group conversation to chat personally with Michael Strahan via a Twitter contest where fans shared a time Michael Strahan made a “Bold” move on the field.

Throughout the evening, party guests nibbled on tray passed hors d’oeuvres and sipped spiked cider while posting photos and documented all of the festivities via live Twitter feed, which was on display for BlackBerry fans at the event, and provided updates to those at home who weren’t able to join in on the action.

For those of you whose lives depend on their BlackBerry devices, scan and click on the QR Code in the photo below to learn about all the new apps available to you like BBM Music.

2012 AGTA Spectrum Awards | Exquisite Award-Winning Jewelry

Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the 2012 AGTA Spectrum Awards, considered the finest jewelry and gemstone competition in the world. I even got the chance to vote on my three favorites (an amazingly difficult task) and I was trying to wait to find out if any of my choices was voted as Editor’s Pick but I sadly I guess it didn’t. The AGTA Spectrum Awards featured over 500 pieces of jewelry from designers like Erica Courtney, Heather Moore, Katey Brunini and Todd Reed (who I’ve previously featured on this blog) along with museum-quality gemstones. Each piece is examined by hand with an eye for craftsmanship and quality of the materials used.

The AGTA Spectrum Awards features various categories like Bridal Wear, Business/Day wear, Classical, Evening Wear, Mens Wear, etc. Once you see some of these pieces, you will see why it was so difficult to select just three. Below are just a few of my favorites. If I had to post all of my favorites, this would be an extremely long post (and yes, I had to choose only three out of all of these). To see more exquisite jewelry and designers, click on each bold /red title category below

Bridal Wear

18K white and rose gold “Mimosa” pendant by Yehouda Saketkhou

18K white and rose gold ring featuring two half-moon Diamonds by Alan Friedman (my dream engagement ring)

Platinum pin/pendant featuring carved black Onyx with Emerald cabochons by Mark Schneider

18K white gold brooch carved Aquamarine accented with Diamonds by Naomi Sarna

18K white gold ring featuring black and white pave Diamonds by Lawrence Gordon

Art Deco Platinum and 18K yellow gold necklace by Ricardo Basta (he actually had several pieces I absolutely loved)

18K white gold “Wheel of Fortune” pendant by Sean Ryan

Evening Wear (I must admit, most of my favorite pieces are from this category)

18K yellow gold ring featuring a carved black Jade fish with fire Opals by Manya Tessler

I love this statement piece – Palladium and 22K yellow gold locket featuring blue Moonstones, grey and white Diamonds, blue Sapphires opening to reveal a Moldavite Buddha by Todd Reed (this amazing wearable art won Best in Show)

18K rose, white and yellow gold Flamingo brooch by Wilfried Kowollik

Now that I’ve showed you a few of my favorites, what are yours?

About the AGTA Spectrum Awards

The AGTA Spectrum Awards™ is considered the most respected and prestigious creative award for the design industry. Launched in 1984, the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ honors, recognizes and promotes designers whose work utilizes natural colored gemstones and cultured pearls in finished fine jewelry design. It has become the benchmark for jewelry designers striving to gain recognition for their work. In 1991, the AGTA created the Cutting Edge Awards to honor creativity in lapidary arts, including faceted gems and pearls, carvings, and objects of art. Both are a true contest of workmanship, creativity and innovation. Winners set the standards of excellence for our entire industry. The Spectrum Awards competition has launched trends, increased visibility for designer jewelry, and inspired great innovation in use of color and materials.

Daisy Fuentes Spring 2012 Collection for Kohl’s

Inspired by the beauty and energy of the South of France, Daisy Fuentes’ S/S 2012 collection, available only at Kohl’s, was whirlwind of color and soft textures. I was quite impressed with the playful prints and energy of the pieces.

One can imagine wearing these looks through a weekend. From a late breakfast on the beach to casual drink after dinner. This interpretation of the cool bohemian style of St. Tropez proved electrifying.

From prints to color, I found so many of these looks wearable. This collection alone is worth making a trip to your nearest Kohl’s store.
