How to Refresh Your Plus Size Wardrobe

How to Refresh Your Plus Size Wardrobe for 2020 and Beyond

Do you stare at your closet morning after morning and think “I have nothing to wear,” while looking at dozens of pieces of clothing? How about walking into work, not feeling as confident as you can because you’ve become bored and uninspired with your wardrobe and didn’t want to put much effort into getting ready? It happens to everyone.

Clothing is a form of self-expression and it says a lot more about us than we think. According to the book that’s been called “the psychology of fashion”, You Are What You Wear, by Jennifer Baumgartner. Clothing and personal style are also things that plus size women turn to in order to cultivate more confidence within themselves. So when our wardrobe doesn’t speak to us, other things in our life like confidence, inspiration, motivation and drive fall to the wayside.

That’s why everyone, at some point—and sometimes more than a couple of times a year—needs to conduct a closet refresh. A plus size wardrobe refresh could either mean investing in new, strategic pieces to help your wardrobe feel current and fresh, or reorganizing your closet to give old pieces a new opportunity to spark confidence and joy for you.

No matter what your next step is to revamp your wardrobe, follow these suggestions to help set you on the right path and get your style game back on point in as little as an hour.

How to Refresh Your Plus Size Wardrobe

Take Inventory

Usually when we lose inspiration or trust in our wardrobe, it’s because we feel like we are missing something–for example, a sharp blazer, a pair of dark wash skinny jeans or a basic white V–neck shirt. We let this idea that we don’t have the right clothing convince us that we will never be able to create the perfect outfit. Before we rip our closet to shreds, it’s important to take inventory of the things we have, the things we need and the things we would like to have.

  1. Write down a list of pieces that you would like to have in your wardrobe that you don’t think you have currently.
  2. Also write down the pieces you love and wear every day that fit you perfectly. If you have time and you’re feeling inspired, think about or write down what it is about these clothes that makes them so special. What characteristics do they possess?

How to Refresh Your Plus Size Wardrobe

Reorganize and Restructure

Before you spend a dime on a new wardrobe, you can rediscover pieces you had previously forgotten about by reorganizing and cleaning out your closet. So let’s get started! If you can, empty everything that is hanging in your closet, but keep these items close by. We are going to go through every item of clothing, so make sure to block out about an hour or two of your time to do this. After this process is complete, you should have a much better idea of exactly which garments are in your closet, and you may find yourself feeling more inspired as you uncover lost items, clothing that still has the tags on it or other pieces that might be old but have a new use in your style. As you go through your closet, make sure you are adding to your inventory list when you realize that you may need to replace damaged clothes or invest in strategic pieces.

  1. Pick a color, like black, and start hanging up all of your black items on one of the far sides of the closet.
  2. As you hang these items up, ask yourself, “Have I worn this within the past three months?” If not, do you plan on wearing it again? If yes, keep the garment and hang it up in the closet. If not, consider donating it. If you don’t like the idea of parting with clothes, place it in a box and if you go 30 days without touching it, donate it. If you go into the box to retrieve it, it’s earned a second chance at life in your closet.
  3. As you hang up clothing by color, start to also organize it by types of garments. Your closet should look something like this: [Black: Dresses | Blouses | Sweaters | Blazers | Pants]; [White: Dresses | Blouses | Sweaters | Blazers | Pants], etc. The reason we are hanging up your clothes by color and then by garment type is so you can get ready faster in the morning, and if things are categorized, you’ll be able to see most things in your closet as you sift through them every day to find the perfect color and garment, rather than have things scattered and get lost.
  4. When you come across seasonal garments that may be good for summer but not winter—like plus size off the shoulder tops – think about how you could style them for the off-season instead of packing them away until next year. Bringing in an off-season piece to an outfit could make a cool addition to one of your favorite looks.
  5. While you are hanging garments up, if you notice that you have a piece of clothing you have been wanting, but forgot you had—like a sharp blazer—cross it off your “need to buy” list we created in the first step.

How to Refresh Your Plus Size Wardrobe

Invest in the Pieces You Need

Now that you have a color- and garment-coordinated wardrobe, you should have a clear vision of the types of pieces you need to invest in to really make your wardrobe pop. Here is some advice to keep in mind while shopping for new additions to your closet.

  1. Stock Up on the Basics – You can never have too many foundational pieces because they are so versatile and are also worn a lot more than statement pieces. Plus size tunics can be a staple in any look and almost every season so don’t be afraid to stock up on them.
  2. Don’t Be Afraid to Indulge in Accessories – Accessories have a lot more power than we give them. They can make or break an outfit, as well as take it from one style to the next. If you notice you’re running low on accessories that could diversify some of the basic items you have in your closet, think about what pieces you may need and prioritize spending for those as well.
  3. Keep Quality in Mind – While we may always be on the hunt for the best bargain, the greatest value for you is within the longevity of your clothing. Invest in high-quality plus size jeans that fit you well, feel comfortable and will last. If you need to splurge on a high-quality item, make sure that it’s something that can be worn for many different occasions and with different outfits. For example, you’ll definitely want to purchase a pair of dark wash skinny jeans rather than velvet plaid leggings because the jeans are classic, and they will carry you through many seasons and multiple years. Whereas the leggings will be trendy for a season and then they will just collect dust in your closet.

Now that you have an organized closet that is easy and efficient to navigate and you have identified the pieces you need to enhance your plus size wardrobe, you should be feeling inspired and ready to dress to the nines.

Inamunai African Fashion

Inamunai: The Fashionable Art From African Couture Designers

We haven’t indulged in some beguiling fashion in a while, so we’re diving right in with the exquisite offerings from Inamunai. One of our favorite things about this African fashion label is it isn’t just one brand, but a collective of wonderful African designers. You truly get experience a vast amount of talent from the birthplace of humanity. The Inamunai brand was founded by Mariam Garuba, a native Nigerian with a passion for clothes and dressmaking. Her online shop features several well-known African couture designers, whose bold style you’ll fall head over heels over. We certainly did when we first laid eyes on some of the extraordinary looks from the Inamunai runway presentation from Harlem Fashion Week.

Inamunai African Fashion

As you can see, every look from this collection boasts a unique and strong style aesthetic.  The vibrant colors and eyecatching Ankara-inspired prints enhance the collection’s chic silhouettes and bold shapes. The collection is teeming with details; you’ll find structured pieces, extravagant collars and sleeves, the juxtaposition of prints, and edgy color combinations. You’ll love the collection’s color palette of dark blues, reds, pinks, and greens. Most, if not all, of the pieces, are made from 100% wax cotton and other woven fabric.

Inamunai African Fashion

We also love the versatility of the collection. There are several looks to take you from day to night, from brunch to nights out on the town. In celebration of daring style, why not embrace the full striking attitude of the collection by layering multiple prints. The lesser courageous can use the prints as a pop of color to liven up a solid or monochromatic look.

Inamunai African Fashion

We see the influences of African fashion sent down multiple runways during fashion week every year. Alas, those are merely interpretations from mostly European designers. The Inamunai collection lets you celebrate African heritage with authentic designs from actual African artisans. If you’re looking to add this global influential fashion aesthetic to your style closet, look no further than Inamunai.

Designer Alianna Liu’s SS2020 collection is literally inspired by her cats. For her spring/summer 2020 ready-to-wear collection, the silhouette is the key between her collection and the female body. It gives the audience the sensation of representing a confident and independent woman, as is her the brand’s identity. By combining luxurious soft fabric with a touch of transparency, the Alianna Liu SS2020 collection brings out the natural beauty of modern femininity, a certain softness, grace, and an ambitious and inspirational female figure.

Christopher Lowman Fall/Winter 19 NYFW Presentation

NYFW THE SHOWS: Christopher Lowman Fall-Winter 2019 Collection

I had the pleasure of attending the Christopher Lowman Fall-Winter 2019 collection this year at Mdrn Dsgn, a lifestyle-focused interior design firm and retail space in the Flatiron District.

In this clever collaboration, Lowman’s theme, “Intelligent Life” is a well-developed branch from Mdrn Design’s Intelligent Living Collection – a luxury-focused furniture collection offering modern, transformable multi-function furnishings for the city dweller.

Christopher Lowman Fall/Winter 19 NYFW Presentation

Over 20 fresh-faced models, both men and women dressed in sporty statement pieces were placed throughout the retail space in an arresting, live mannequin spectacle. Softly tailored sports jackets and shirts are combined with athletic performance pieces within each look. Lowman ties together these contrasts with human comfort; a cozy, and comfy touch:  Tall white cotton socks and cashmere house slippers. The skin was fresh, and super glowy – thanks to skincare by Immunocologie and makeup from Aveda. The effect was a look into the Christopher Lowman customer at home after a busy of traveling.

NYFW has often occurred in two phases: Men’s Fashion Week then an explosion of women’s fashion collections. This separation slowly begins to blur as time marches on. More women are inclined to wear items that many fashion brands would call “the boyfriend” maybe for its edge,  maybe for its ease. Simultaneously, silhouettes for men have also slimmed down considerably in the last decade, resulting in easy, sporty clothing for any gender that is easily interchangeable between the traditional binary genders.

For intents and purposes, Christopher Lowman designs primarily under the Menswear category; but we found that many of his pieces transitional and wearable for women!

The collection aligned both the design aesthetic of Christopher Lowman and Intelligent Living’s Creative Director Warren Kay. This collaboration further uncovers similar sensibilities between both brands. Both lead by making forward-thinking statements with high–end materials, quality design, focusing on quality and craftsmanship. Warren Kay, a self-proclaimed futurist, and Lowman both tapping into the youthful spirit of their customer. Both design firms focus on raising the luxury standard in lifestyle design without forgetting comfort is king.

The Christopher Lowman collection is produced in New York City. Christopher began his career interning with Pyer Moss, working closely with the design team, eventually venturing out on his own. He has established celebrity clientele:  Chris Brown, Jake Miller, Aidan Alexander, Jr. Smith and others.

NYFW: Greta Constantine Fall/Winter 2019 Presentation

NYFW THE SHOWS: Greta Constantine Fall-Winter 2019 Collection

Our first show of the NYFW season was quite the statement maker. In a time when we’re seeing the negative effects of fast fashion and fashion houses choosing to be more sustainable, designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong are boldly “shopping their closets” – specifically their fabric closets. The duo behind Greta Constantine has decided to revisit past fabrications available in their coffers for their Fall-Winter 2019 Collection. This eco-friendly decision is a great step forward for any designer; of course, the fabrics were the last things on our minds as we were captivated by the bold looks from the Greta Constantine Fall-Winter 2019 Collection.

NYFW: Greta Constantine Fall/Wnter 2019 Presentation

With this Fall-Winter 2019 Collection, Greta Constantine answered the question, “is it possible to be demure and provocative?” Of course, that answer is yes. Nary a sight of bare skin was shown except for the models’ faces. With volume, lots of layering, and a sense of chasteness, the Greta Constantine Fall-Winter 2019 Collection proves that a woman isn’t boring just because she’s covered up.

NYFW: Greta Constantine Fall/Wnter 2019 Presentation NYFW: Greta Constantine Fall/Wnter 2019 Presentation

The collection boasted high collars, lots of sparkle (especially bodysuits, and turtlenecks), a mix of classic and bold hues, and of course volume. The volume we saw in oversized sleeves, shoulders, and pant legs, elongated sleeves, and lengths. We loved several looks from the Greta Constantine Fall-Winter 2019 Collection. Favorites included an oversize sequin tee, high-neck tulle jacket, puffy brocade jacket, and a dark grey wool dress layered over a yellow gold sequin turtleneck.

The ready-to-wear womenswear collection has been around since 2006. Based and founded in Canada, the Greta Constantine collection is available in over 40-doors worldwide across 15-countries. You can find past collections at Hudson’s Bay, Nordstrom, and online at Moda Operandi and Farfetch.

With this foray into more demure fashion, we have to ask? Are you ready to give up your bodycon fashion pieces for a more modest style? Will you welcome looks like those in this collection into your wardrobe? We’d love to hear your responses.

INIFD and London School of Trend's Vibrant India NYFW Show

INIFD and London School of Trend’s Vibrant India NYFW Show

Every fashion week, we find ourselves gravitating more and more to fashion shows that feature up-and-coming fashion designer shows. To see the creativity, inspired aesthetics, and boldness we sometimes feel are lacking in big name shows. One of our favorites this season was the eclectic INIFD and London School of Trend’s Vibrant India NYFW Show. Based in India, the Inter-National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) in association with the London School of Trends, returned for another successful season at New York Fashion Week with vibrant and stunning Spring/Summer 19 collections.

INIFD and London School of Trend's Vibrant India NYFW Show

The Vibrant India NYFW Show featured a curated collection from 54 specially selected designs from across the 120 INIFD institutes in India. The collection boasted innovative silhouettes and pioneering style illuminating the runway in a colorful kaleidoscope of customary textiles and embellishments. The result is an eclectic array of trans-seasonal pieces showcasing the organization’s creative departments across the country. We wish we had the opportunity to meet some of the designers but unfortunately, that would not be the case during this very busy NYFW.

INIFD and London School of Trend's Vibrant India NYFW Show INIFD and London School of Trend's Vibrant India NYFW Show

The show allowed designers to present the perfect opportunity to marry the great traditional craftsmanship of specialist Indian crafts from around the nation. It featured modern graphic printing which echoes the traditional tie-dye technique, to the imagery of the beguiling Indian landscape. Experts of traditional Kutch embroidery, Phulkari, Kasuti and Chikankari play a part in marrying tradition to modern designed silhouettes.

INIFD and London School of Trend's Vibrant India NYFW Show

INIFD has created a stamp on London Fashion Week. With this showing, they are quickly establishing their presence at NYFW. INIFD’s aim is to create a platform for emerging Indian designers and the Indian fashion industry. By promoting the innovative design aesthetic and craftsmanship amongst the bustling fast fashion landscape, they are doing just that.

We really enjoyed the vibrancy of the Vibrant India NYFW Show. It’s only further set aflame our desire to attend India’s Fashion Week. We’d love to know your thoughts. What do you think of the INIFD and London School of Trend’s Vibrant India NYFW Show?
