New Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro Collection Combines Luxury & Childlike Whimsy

Valentine’s Day is just about a month away — and some of us might expect a beautiful bouquet for the occasion, as 37% of flowers purchased are given as gifts. But before February even arrives, you could treat yourself with an even more fashionable kind of present. Now that Loewe, a Spanish luxury fashion house, has finally debuted its much-anticipated capsule collection based on the beloved animated film My Neighbor Totoro, the world may seem just a little bit brighter. That said, you’ll need to save up if you expect to splurge on one of these pieces.

A Japanese animated film with a cult following, My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of two sisters who relocate with their father to the countryside in order to care for their ailing mother. After wandering into the forest, the sisters befriend some local spirits — including Totoro, a large creature (resembling a cat or rabbit, depending on who you ask) who helps the girls and goes on adventures with them. The film is easily one of Studio Ghibli’s most famous, as Totoro acts as the studio’s mascot, though films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Magic Castle have also seen widespread acclaim. While art therapy has been around since the 1940s, Studio Ghibli has been delighting audiences since the mid-1980s. And for many, the studio’s films have brought a sense of comfort during difficult times.

Loewe Luxury Fashion Accessories

Those who are familiar with the work of Studio Ghibli or who have an eye for Japanese influence will be enchanted by the most recent capsule collection from Loewe, a fashion brand helmed by designer Jonathan Anderson.

According to a statement Anderson made to Vogue, “…There are the values that My Neighbor Totoro as a whole stands for. I believe certain ideas the film conveys, such as the environment seen through the eyes of children and the concept of adventure, are very significant, especially in these times of uncertainty.”

The collection is now available on Loewe’s official website, as well as the Selfridges website and in select stores, and includes ready-to-wear garments and accessories all designed with the iconic characters in mind and featuring images plucked right from the film. There are casual sweatshirts, stylish leather bags, ethereal blouses, quirky shoes, and even biker jackets available for purchase; despite the fact that motorcycle accident fatalities reached 5,172 nationwide in 2017, many fashion-forward consumers enjoy the look of a leather jacket (even if they’ve never been on a motorcycle themselves).

While the collection perfectly captures the essence of childlike whimsy, it also comes with a steep price tag. Pieces start at $350 and exceed $9,000 — so if you’re simply seeking Studio Ghibli merch, it might be better to look elsewhere. But if you’re a lifelong fan and you’ve got a stimulus check to spare, you might be able to snag yourself something special from this in-demand collection.

Well even if love is not calling for you yet, rest assured that it is definitely in the air! Not just love by the way, but all the things that pertain to love. Newness, carefree fun and party like revelry included.

Not feeling it yet? Then you simply must read and look further on for Prabal Gurung has got the things that inspire love on his brain geared for your diminutive forms with his new collection for Target. In what was literally a cavalcade of fun, Mr. Gurung (pictured below) unveiled his lovely creations for Target’s spring roster last Wednesday in the celebratory spirit of all that he loves about the season.

Showcased were pretty frocks adorned with bursting floral prints in both vivid full-bloom saturation and avant-remixed with honeycomb detailing, sweet delicate lace trims and panels and vibrant seasonal hues. The playful accessories served to enhance the form with a bit of whimsy, femininity and bling and were great accompaniments to the chic floral, color-blocked and color saturated dresses, blouses and skirts. From the gladiator-styled and ankle-strapped low wedge sandals to the precious crystal bracelets and necklaces, the accessories all had the appeal of statement pieces with a smartness to them that made them great accents even for a woman to incorporate into her already existing wardrobe.

The spring represents new growth and the colorful reawakening of clothing after a grey winter of full lengths and covered bodies. In this dazzling collection, Mr. Gurung shows off what he does best; pretty dresses and ready to wear with a modern sensibility for a women to live a fun life in while remaining coquettish, confident and pretty.

The launch was literally a carnival. Pier 57 was seemingly transformed into “Prabal’s Theme Park of Love” complete with amusement park games that guests played to win stuffed animals and Target gift cards and a giant Tilt-a-Whirl in the middle of the venue.

The food was also just as lively as the games with everything from mini carnival french fry cups to Asian dumplings to caramel crab apples to hot dog bites. Then what caps off an theme park visit better than a live show? A live show with a performance from Grammy-winning recording artist Ne-yo who topped off a night of childlike revelry, however, it was all in celebration of the wonderful clothing and accessories.

Raven Denim Fall 2012 Collection

There are a few denim brands that have become staples in my wardrobe as I’m sure is the case for most of you but as with anyone who loves discovering new things, I was happy to be introduced to this “anti-casual” denim brand called Raven Denim. Known mainly for their very flattering, signature wide bootleg denim trouser, the Mackenzie, and heralded by designer Ya-el Torbati, Raven Denim brings a refreshing and upscale take on denim. In addition to the popularity of the Mackenzie trouser, the Remy skinny, Sadie Kick straight-leg, and Mackie slim-boot trouser have also become signatures in the line. For Fall 2012, we see lots of richly colored corduroy (trousers and jeans) in varying silhouettes.

One of my favorites from Raven Denim is actually anything with their Arrows print (see above). This print while doesn’t compete with or overpower the styles, giving them a cool and fresh look. Other exciting news for Raven Denim is their collaboration with designer Stephen Burrows – a first foray into denim for Burrows in a long time and a first collaboration for Raven Denim.

Featuring Burrows’ trademark red stitching, the denim collection, inspired by Burrows’ muses, featured highwaisted short shorts and skinny bottoms in both bold prints, dark blues and black and is set to retail between $165.00 to $218.00.

Alex & Chloe for Forever21 Holiday 2011

Forever 21 has done some amazing collaborations in the past and for Holiday 2011, they continue to bring great designers into their world. Forever 21 has become a great way to be introduced to unique designers that may not be on your radar. One such great collaboration is Alex & Chloe for Forever 21.

And guess what – they’re all under $20.00. That’s right, the pieces start at $4.80 up to $15.80. The Hematite finished collection is edgy and punk-inspired featuring spikes, studs, crosses and modern architectural shapes. As you can see, the pieces look expensive, I attest that to the hematite finish and the fact that the jewelry are actually heavier than usual Forever 21 pieces. For those of you not familiar, the regular Alex & Chloe Collection has pieces that are above $2,000 so we’re getting amazing pieces for ridiculously wallet-friendly prices.
