Seville Hat by Brooklyn

Tenth Street Hats: A Collection of the Best Fall Hats for Women

We love hats, the variety of styles, the way it completes a look, and the way it can change your look. For as long as we can remember, we’ve struggled to find a hat that both fits and looks good on our heads. Thanks to the combination of big heads and a lot of hair, finding those gems are few and far between. Even now we own hats that we’ve never worn. We love the idea of hats and love to see people wearing them, while we cursed our follically blessed and larger than most heads. But we have discovered hope in the form of Tenth Street Hats, a range of designer hats made in the old way and sold in a new way. We’ve finally found a hat company with very chic hats that we look good it (and they fit).

Tenth Street Hats: A Collection of the Best Fall Hats for Women

The family-run Tenth Street Hats boasts a collection of hats that blends a vintage feel with modern sensibilities. The California-based label works with expert craftsmen and cutting-edge designers to bring you quality hats. Using rare hat-making machines, Tenth Street Hats has been providing stylish hats for almost 100 years. Their range of women’s fall hat offerings includes styles from the following designers: Aegean, Biltmore, Brooklyn, John Callanan, Dorfman Pacific, Scala, and Stetson. They offer a lot more brands for men, including Santana by Carlos Santana, Stacy Adams, Indiana Jones, Panama Jack, and more. Check out all the fall hats they have available.

Tenth Street Hats: A Collection of the Best Fall Hats for Women

This fall, Tenth Streets Hats offers the following women’s styles: Fedoras, Fishermen, Cloche, Safari, Berets, Safari, Western, and much more. The new season means new styles, new fashions, and new accessories. We fell (pun intended) head over heels in love with the Cloche silhouette, particularly the Sciacca by Scala (featured below in Blush; a perfect way to rock Pantone’s 16-1511 Rose Tan). This fashionable and functional felt wool hat features a feminine bow detail at the back and is crushable, so it retains its shape when packed. Other favorites, also by Scala, are the Katie Ann Cloche, which features spiral studded detailing; and the Tula, a pleated crown style in boiled wool. The Seville by Brooklyn, an elegant, wool felt Gaucho (boater-style) hat with a leather band and bow.

How Clear Face Masks Are Opening a Window of Communication

How Clear Face Masks Are Opening a Window of Communication

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t exactly been convenient for anyone, but the changes and regulations that have occurred because of it are more troublesome for some than others. In particular, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that everyone wear cloth face coverings in public has created a major challenge for people who have hearing impairments. People who are deaf or hard of hearing often rely on lip-reading to understand what others are saying. With masks now covering the lower half of almost every face in public, reading lips has become virtually impossible.

How Clear Face Masks Are Opening a Window of Communication

For the 10 million Americans who are hard of hearing, this means that basic communication is not-so-basic anymore. Just going to the grocery store presents problems, as they can’t tell if someone is asking them a question or to move out of the way. Going to important appointments creates an even more dangerous situation for people who rely on reading lips, as they don’t know what doctors or other medical professionals are attempting to tell them.

These challenges have caused the demand for window or clear face masks to skyrocket over the past few months. The United States already spends nearly three times more on healthcare than any other country in the world, but people across the country knew they had to put the necessary money and time into making masks that would create a safer way of living for people who are hearing impaired. While they might not be able to get everyone in a grocery store to wear one, their family members could wear them and act as a go-between for people with hearing impairments and the general public or medical providers.

How Clear Face Masks Are Opening a Window of Communication

One company that has started manufacturing window masks is ADCO Hearing, a company that has long made products for people who are hard of hearing. When the nonprofit Hands and Voices, which supports families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, approached ADCO about making masks that allowed for lip reading, the company got to work. The President of ADCO Hearing, Abby Armijo, started the production of these window masks by hand sewing them with her mother in her kitchen. They made 150 clear face masks and every single one was sold by the next morning. Armijo knew she had found a major gap in the mask market and began the process of expanding the operation.

How Clear Face Masks Are Opening a Window of Communication

Now, ADCO has three large-scale manufacturing facilities that make thousands of window masks. According to Armijo, the company is almost always sold out of the clear face masks.

Although the mask’s see-through panel is a simple concept, it’s a game-changer in the daily lives of many people. Not only can it help people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but a window mask also allows anyone to have an effective conversation involving full facial expressions with another human being while staying safe. This can be extremely important for the 65 million people who provide care for a chronically ill, aged, or disabled family member or friend and need more than their eyes and muffled voices to communicate. Even though people may not realize it, humans use every part of their face to communicate, not just their voices and ears.

This perk of window masks is also important when communicating with children. Seeing people wearing face masks can be scary for young kids and many children with hearing or speaking impairments or other disabilities have significant trouble communicating with masks. Using window masks may be a great option for teachers to have effective conversations with kids if they go back to school. Whether they work at a school that is among the 87% of private schools that have fewer than 300 students or at a public school with a thousand students, teachers are concerned about kids following mask policies. With window masks, everyone can stay safe while having better communication.

In addition to ADCO, there are many companies and individuals making masks with clear windows. Rafi Nova is a speech pathologist based in Boston and made a mask with a BPA-free plastic window. Inu is selling window masks on Amazon that have a cotton-based face covering and plastic for the window portion. ClearMask™ is producing a wraparound mask that is completely clear and doesn’t fog as easily as vinyl plastic. Three years of research and development went into this mask and this is one of the only window face masks approved by the Food and Drug Administration. For those who don’t need FDA approval and just need a way to better communicate with family and friends, there are several window mask sellers on sites like Etsy as well.

The Must-Have Accessory: Fashion Brands Start Selling COVID-19 Face Masks

In the fashion world, a must-have accessory is something that’s on-trend. It’s a piece that’s so popular that not having it signals you’re out of touch with the latest developments in fashion. In a world currently coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, a must-have accessory is something that protects your health and the health of everyone around you. Without it, you risk contracting the coronavirus, spreading it to anyone you interact with, and unraveling the progress communities have made so far in flattening the curve.

The COVID-19 face masks have quickly found itself at the intersection of these two meanings of “must-have accessory.” At the beginning of April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began recommending that every individual wear a cloth face-covering whenever they are in public settings where it is hard to maintain social distancing measures, such as at the grocery store or pharmacy. The CDC emphasizes that the cloth face coverings can be made out of household items and that surgical masks and N-95 respirators are critical supplies that should be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.

Despite this recommendation, government officials have done little to help the general public obtain the appropriate COVID-19 face masks. People who are handy with a needle and thread can make them out of bedsheets or scarves, but what about the large portion of the public who don’t have the time or skills to create homemade COVID-19 face masks?

COVID-19 face masks

That’s where fashion brands are stepping in. As the demand for face masks skyrockets, brands have started designing their own versions of the COVID-19 face masks and selling them to consumers. Not only do consumers need masks to leave their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, but masks from designers are much more visually interesting than standard medical masks. Masks from fashion companies have quickly become a new form of self-expression, helping consumers maintain a sense of individuality while they wear something that covers half of their faces. Some of our favorite fashionable COVID-19 face masks include Dalia MacPhee, Christopher Palu, Ivon Los Angeles, Grace Eleyae, and Christy Dawn  (photos included in this feature).

COVID-19 face masks

Selling aesthetically-pleasing face masks is also beneficial for the revenue of these brands. In 2018, consumers spent about $517 billion online working with U.S. merchants. A good portion of those billions has dried up as the coronavirus continues to change the financial wellbeing of Americans, causing consumers to be much more conscious about how they spend their money. Selling practical, yet fashionable, face masks are the perfect opportunity for clothing companies to tap into the demands of the public and keep their businesses afloat at the same time.

COVID-19 face masks

As brands have been rolling out masks, they’ve been incorporating more practical features as well as appealing designs. One issue some people had anticipated with making and selling masks in this crisis was how they would get the necessary materials. About 95% of the world’s cargo moves by ship, but the global pandemic has all but stopped companies’ normal supply chains. Luckily, brands have found ways to make masks without having to further tax the world’s limited supply of resources. Many have been recycling fabrics from their past collections or using scraps of denim and other fabrics that would otherwise have been thrown away. Brands are also taking care to make masks with washable fabric so that consumers can sanitize their masks and re-wear them.

COVID-19 face masks

Many fashion brands are running special deals that also help out the country’s hard-working healthcare workers. Offering 1+1 or 5+5 match packages has become commonplace on websites of fashion brands. When you buy a 5+5 pack at Christy Dawn, for example, you will receive five sustainable, reusable masks and the other five masks will be sent to medical workers. Other brands are making donations on their own to help those in need. For instance, J.Crew and Madewell are each selling non-medical face masks in packs of three for consumers but have also donated a total of 75,000 single-use masks to the healthcare system. Rose Brand is donating 20% of the sale of their 3-pk of Make A Difference and Keep Your Distance COVID-19 face masks to the Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Coronavirus Sustainable Face Mask

If you’ve been procrastinating making a mask of your own, check to see if any of your favorite fashion brands are selling non-surgical face masks. You may even be able to find out in an easy zero-click search, a type of search that makes up over 62% of mobile searches and will answer your query right on the results page without you having to click on any links. Once you have your answer, you can start browsing the brand’s mask options and find one that speaks to your style and budget. Remember to keep an eye out for deals that send masks to those in need so that you can do your part to help the community.

Even as coronavirus hospitalizations start to slow down in the United States, Keep Your Distance that the public will need to keep up social distancing measures for the foreseeable future. Some even predict these measures extending into the next year and beyond, with this health crisis permanently changing how people interact with the world. This means that although some parts of society may start returning to normal, it’s likely that wearing face masks in public will be the new normal. Investing in sustainable, reusable face masks now will help keep you healthy, keep small fashion brands in the business, and keep healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 protected against the virus.

Holiday Gift Guide: Give the Gift of Great Eyewear This Holiday Season

For some reason, there’s a misconception that you’re only supposed to wear sunglasses during the summer; as if the sun doesn’t shine during the other three seasons. We all know it does plus the winter season also bring sun glare. Because the sun doesn’t rise quite as high as it does in the summer, the low winter sun can cause glare when driving or walking. Indoors, we stare at computer and phone screens all day, causing eye strain. In other words, there’s always a need to protect your eyes year’ round. Just because we’re heading into the winter season, doesn’t mean we should stop wearing protective eyewear. There are plenty of options on sites like https://humpsoptics.com/collections/womens-polarized-sunglasses so be sure to take a look if you want to keep your eyes protected all year round! Plus, aside from their obvious cool factor and variety of frames for men and women, these great eyewear brands feature many attributes that go with pretty much any outfit.

Give the Gift of Great Eyewear This Holiday Season

Whether you’re looking for regular sun protection, stylish frames, blue light blockers, or color blindness correction, these eyewear brands should be your first and perhaps only stop. We’re featuring favorite sunnies from JORD, Eagle Eyes, Enchroma, and Pixel Eyewear.

JORD EYEWEAR

JORD SUNGLASSES

We love JORD for many stylish reasons. First the incorporation of real wood into their products (they have gorgeous wood watches); a great example of this is their round-framed Louie Sunglasses which boasts finished African Padauk. These must-haves features ultra-light polarized lenses, a reinforced nickel, and copper alloy frame, flex spring hinges for improved comfort and reduction in breakability, and wood from Central and Tropical West Africa. The round-framed Louie Sunglasses feature polarized lenses; a high impact, and water-resistant, thermal plastic frame made from natural cotton linter and wood pulp, reinforced with a beta titanium alloy. These modern and feminine take on the classic aviators boasts walnut wood from Eastern Europe. The best part, JORD has a huge holiday sale going on right now, so both of these are available for less than the usual retail.

EAGLE EYE SUNGLASSES

EAGLE EYES SUNGLASSES

As our daily lives continue to be completely overrun with computer and smartphone screens, our exposure to harmful blue light increases. Eagle Eyes Eyewear is helping to combat that issue with its cutting-edge range of sunglasses that uses NASA-certified technology. They offer a wide variety of men’s and women’s sunglasses, low light, night, and computer eyewear. Eagle Eye’s TriLenium® Polarized Sunglasses protect your eyes, blocking blue light and 99.9% of harmful solar radiation. Get ready to say goodbye to eye strain and eye fatigue. We love the cool oversized styles like the Astin and Carina sunglasses. But there’s plenty of options available like rimless, foldable, aviator, active, etc.

PIXEL EYEWEAR

Pixel Computer Glasses

Continuing the Computer eyewear category, we present Pixel Eyewear, the clearest computer glasses engineered to protect your eyes from blue light. Pixel Eyewear provides breakthrough lens technology that filters 50 percent of blue light and up to 95% at the strongest wavelengths, without the yellow tint. Its lenses also contain nanotechnology that reduces smudges and repels water and dust. For comfort, each lens has an anti-reflective coating, eliminating computer glare and reducing the stress on your eyes. Along with clear computer glasses, Pixel also offers premium polarized sunglasses, and a range of stronger Amber-hued glasses, which filter more blue light. The amber glasses are designed for heavy-users, gamers, and night shift workers.

ENCHROMA EYEWEAR

Color Blindness Correction Sunglasses

Last but certainly not least, we’ve all seen and cried along with the videos for this brand. People who have gone their entire lives being color blind, finally see the world as colorfully as we do every day. Although it’s difficult to imagine, seeing the grey world “lit up” in color is a gift many thought they’d never experience until Enchroma Sunglasses. Whether you’re looking for indoor (mild, moderate Protan color blindness) or outdoor (most types of color blindness) color blindness correction glasses, all Enchroma eyewear is 100% UV Protection and Rx compatible. This holiday season, you can save $50 off classic wayfarer styles like the Ellis, aviators like the Atlas, and square frames like the Grant. Along with color correction, all the Enchroma eyewear block 100% of the UVA and UVB radiation components in sunlight.

If you’re looking to step away from the typical boring girt, why not give the gift of great eyewear from one of these amazing brands. We’re positive you’ll have a very happy recipient this holiday season.
