It feels wonderful to be back and active again after my HP laptop decided it was time to retire and I’m trying my hardest to do all I can with 4 minutes at the library. Getting everyone back up to speed, we’ve had a bit of a whirlwind experience with spirits, one of which was tequila. First up is our celebration of the Tequila Herradura Luck is Earned Campaign, their latest advertising campaign from the global tequila brand, which celebrates the hard working people who channels the brand’s message of ambition, passion and soul. The Tequila Herradura Luck Is Earned event, held at the legendary The Cutting Room, featured a sampling of crafted margaritas by New York Mixologist Jimmy Fransioli (just in time for International Margarita Day), and a live performance by Grammy winning jazz-funk guitarist Eric Krasno.

1 Parts Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
0.75 Part Agave Nectar
1 Lime Wedge (Garnish)
Combine all the ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake hard so that some of the ice melts, then strain over fresh ice. Garnish with lime wedge.

 

FRENCH MARGARITA


1.5 oz Tequila Herradura Silver
0.75 oz Chambord Liqueur
0.75 oz Pomegranate Juice
0.5 oz Lime Juice
Raspberries (Garnish)
Shake ingredients with ice and strain into margarita or martini glass. Garnish with raspberries.

High Plains Drifter Margarita, Charred Pineapple & Sage

Razorfish – Patron

1.5 oz Patrón Silver
.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
2 Slices charred pineapple
.25 oz Yuzu juice*
.5 oz Fresh lime juice
.25 oz Simple syrup
+ 4 Sage leaves, 2 for garnish
+ 2 dash Lime bitters
+ Slice charred pineapple for garnish
+ Chipotle salt rim**

*If Yuzu juice is not available, substitute 2 parts lemon juice: 1 part orange juice.

**Chipotle salt rim
.5 Cup salt + .75 tsp dried chipotle powder

Char 2 pineapple slices and reserve one slice. Combine two pieces pineapple, 4 sage leaves and simple syrup in shaker and muddle. Add remaining liquid ingredients and shake vigorously with ice to chill. Double strain onto fresh ice in a chipotle salt-rimmed rocks glass. Garnish with a slice of charred pineapple and two sage leaves.

Mumbai Margarita, Mango & Indian Spices

.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Lime
1 oz Fresh lime juice

.5 oz Spicy rose syrup*

*Spicy rose syrup:
Mix .5 oz simple syrup, a jalapeño coin and a dash of rose water.

**Green chili-salt rim:
Fresh green chilis, cilantro and a bit of garlic. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe with a chili-salt rim. Garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel and mint sprig.

Tiki Rita, Grapefruit & Tiki Spices

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Strain onto fresh ice in a Tiki glass that has been rimmed with Hawaiian sea salt. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a lime wheel pierced with three cloves and grated nutmeg.

Tropicante Margarita, Mango & Fresh Avocado

1.75 oz Patrón Reposado
.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Mango
.5 oz Light agave syrup
1 oz Fresh lime juice
.25 Medium avocado
+ Short dash celery bitters
+ Short dash grapefruit bitters
+ Chipotle chili salt*
+ Sliced mango for garnish

*Chipotle chili salt:
.5 Cup of salt
1 T chipotle powder

Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop out half of one side and add to cocktail tin, mashing with a spoon until soft. Add liquid ingredients to the tin, use a spoon to release avocado from the side of the tin, and “dry shake” the contents (without ice) until the avocado is broken up and emulsified. Rim a double old fashioned glass with chipotle chili salt* and fill with ice. Add ice to shaker tin and shake vigorously until well chilled. Use a mesh strainer to “fine strain” the cocktail into the iced glass. Garnish with a ribbon of mango.

Coralina Margarita, Red Wine & Hibiscus

1.75 oz Patrón Reposado
.75 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
.75 oz Simple syrup
1 oz Fresh lime juice
.5 oz Red Wine (Mexican, or other)
+ Sugar-salt rim*

*Sugar-salt rim:
Pulverize .25 cup dried hibiscus in a spice grinder. Add .25 cup sugar and .25 cup kosher salt and pulse until combined.

Combine Patrón Reposado, Patrón Citrónge Orange, simple syrup and lime juice in a shaker tin; add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe rimmed with sugar-salt rim.* Carefully float red wine on the surface of the cocktail and garnish with a lime wheel.

English Garden Margarita, Green Peas & Earl Grey

Razorfish – Patron

1.5 oz / 50 ml Patrón Silver
.5 oz / 15 ml Patrón Citrónge Orange
.75 oz / 20 ml Fresh lemon juice
.5 oz / 15 ml Apricot liqueur
.5 oz / 15 ml Earl Grey tea syrup*
+ 3 Drops orange flower water
+ 2 Sugar snap peas, one for garnish
+ 2 Sprigs mint, one for garnish
+ Pumpkin oil and smoked salt rim

*Earl Grey tea syrup:
Combine simple syrup with hot water and 5 tea bags.

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle 1 sugar snap pea and 1 mint sprig with Earl Grey tea syrup.* Add liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker, along with 1 cracked sugar snap pea and 1 sprig of mint. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Use a fine strainer to strain into glass rimmed with pumpkin oil and smoked salt. Garnish with mint sprig and sugar snap pea.

Pacific Rim Margarita, Coconut & Jalapeno

1.5 oz / 50 ml Patrón Silver
.5 oz / 15 ml Patrón Citrónge Orange
.25 oz / 7.5 ml Spicy coconut syrup* (Monin or similar)
.75 oz / 25 ml Yuzu juice
.25 oz Fresh lime juice
+ Pinch smoked salt (optional)
+ Lemon wheel for garnish
+ Dehydrated lime salt rim**

*Spicy coconut syrup:
Infuse coconut syrup with a few slices of jalapeño until a pleasant spiciness emerges. Strain out solids using a mesh strainer. Store in refrigerator.

**Dehydrated lime salt rim:
Using a zester or fine grater, remove 1 tablespoon of zest from a lime. Allow to dry thoroughly on a paper towel. Add dried lime zest to 2 tablespoons salt and pulverize until combined.

If Yuzu juice is not available, substitute 2 parts lemon juice: 1 part white grapefruit juice.Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Strain into a salt-rimmed coupe. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Perfect Pear Margarita (Serves 8)


2 cups Sauza Signature Blue Silver
1 cup simple syrup
1/2 cup lime
1/2 cup lemon
4 peeled pears
8 rosemary sprigs
Add ingredients to an ice-filled pitcher and stir. Pour into margarita glasses and garnish each with a pear slice and rosemary sprig.

Sauza Classic Margarita (Serves 8)


1 ½ cups Sauza Signature Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila
1 cup lime juice
½ cup DeKuyper Triple Sec Liqueur
½ cup simple syrup
Salt for rimming
Lime wheels
Add ingredients to pitcher and stir. Pour over ice into salt-rimmed margarita glasses. Garnish each with a lime wheel on the rim and serve.

The Late Night Lychee Margarita (Serves 8)


1 1/2 cups Sauza Signature Blue Silver
1/2 cup lychee-infused simple syrup
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
15-20 sprigs of cilantro
8 jalapeño slices
Lychee garnish
Add ingredients to an ice-filled pitcher and stir. Pour over ice into salt-rimmed margarita glasses. Garnish with lychee and cilantro.

You already know of our obsession with all things tea, so we write this with a great deal of pleasure. We had the great pleasure of being invited to celebrate Twinings of London’s The Art of Earl Grey, the three newest flavor additions to the brand’s long legacy of fine teas (they have 300 years of tea expertise under their belt).

For those not in the know, Earl Grey is a black tea infused with bergamot, it is aromatic, flavorful, a great energy booster, and one of the two most popular blends of black tea in the world (English Breakfast is the other). Twinings has been blending Earl Grey tea for almost two centuries. We also had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Stephen Twining (pictured below), a 10th Generation Twining. Along with singing the praises of Twinings tea to him, we had the opportunity to ask him a question we have wondered about since we first started drinking Twinings – what’s the significance of the “S” on the brand name? If you notice, his last name has no S.

As it goes:

When Richard Twining (The Grandson of the founder) put up the doorway to our Strand Shop in 1787, he did not like the ” ” at the end of the name, so removed it. Thus creating our brand name.

Add in the fact that it is the season of holiday celebrations, and you’re left with millions of people out enjoying cocktails. Tragically, every holiday season, an estimated 728 people are injured or killed in a drunk-driving accident according to the Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A few weeks ago, we joined Diageo to learn about the Diageo x Johnnie Walker Decisions Virtual Reality Experience, a first-of-its-kind virtual reality experience that puts consumers of legal drinking age in the middle of a fatal drunk driving crash. This wonderful initiative is the newest addition to their Join the Pact program, which urges everyone to stop drunk driving by having them take a pledge to never get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

The event featured a live panel discussion featuring Diageo CMO James Thompson, Diageo Corporate Relations Jon Pageler, and Former police chief Bill Georges, where we learned more about the topic and how Diageo and Johnnie Walker are leading the charge on using cutting-edge technology to educate consumers on these important topics. The panel was moderated by Craig Carton, co-host of the Boomer and Carton in the Morning radio show.

After the panel, we had an exclusive sneak-peek at the “Decisions” trailer using the Samsung Gear VR headset. Of course, there were libations on hand and we enjoyed a one or two delicious Johnnie Walker cocktails (don’t worry, an Uber was ready at hand to take us home). We indulged in one alcoholic cocktail, and in the spirit of not drinking and driving, we opted for an equally delicious mocktail (non-alcoholic) then headed to check out the Diageo x Johnnie Walker Decisions VR film for ourselves.
