Ohio Spa Owner Under Fire For Naming Nail Salon ‘Inappropriately’

Jobs. A necessary evil. That is, of course, unless your job doesn’t feel like day-to-day toil. A poll taken in 2016 referred to Millennials as the job hopping generation, with six in 10 open to a new job at any given time. This is a greater number than any previous generation.

While that fact has drawn criticism from older generations, younger people are much more likely not to suffer through doing a job they hate. A concept that doesn’t compute to certain mindsets. A way to avoid disliking your job is to start your own business. Sure, it’s tough at first, but you’re ultimately in charge of what happens, for good or for ill. Plus, you get to name your own business.

Ohio resident Dawn Moon is a new business owner. The licensed cosmetologist recently opened her nail salon and spa that has since caused quite the scene. The value of on-site signage is equal to 24 full-page newspaper ads each year. For Moon, this wasn’t enough, so she took her marketing acumen and opened Pandora’s Box by officially naming her nail salon Hand Jobs Nails & Spa.

So many reactions. Outrage. Offense. Laughs. Viral marketing. Her spa, in just a few days, is on the map internationally.

“You don’t want something that they can’t remember or that they can’t pronounce or say. In less than a week, I think the whole country knows about us. You can’t pay for that kind of advertising,” she explained.

Phenomenally clever. She goes on to defend the name because it’s literally the establishment’s job to work on hands. Still, some residents of the town are outraged over the name and have appealed to the zoning board to force Moon to change the name of her spa. She’s prepared to fight it tooth-and-nail.

“If you go in and get your nose done, it’s called a nose job right? Well you come in and get your hands done it’s a hand job!” she argues.

She’s certainly not wrong and whichever way the verdict turns out, she already got enough free marketing out of it for the whole ordeal to be worth it. The spa has reportedly received more compliments and jokes about it than ire, but it only takes one “I want to talk to a manager!” type to get the authorities involved.

The decision of whether Hand Jobs Nails & Spa remains named thusly is forthcoming and if they’re told to change the name, appeals will be filed and it’ll be taken to court, reports say.

Some 99% of marketers swear by the unique value of trade show exhibits that aren’t found in traditional marketing mediums. We might suggest they take a lesson from Dawn Moon and harness the unique advantage of knowing the viral content market and thoroughly exploiting the attention span of the internet and the collective reach of a little PG-13 humor.

Now, who’s ready for a manicure?

Nail Your Halloween Mani with Deborah Lippmann

Who’s ready for Halloween? What will you rock on your nails? We may not know what our costume will be, but we certainly know what our nails will be dressed as. Thanks to Deborah Lippmann and her Limited Edition ROAR Fall 2015 Collection, we have found our spooktacular Halloween manicure.  This Halloween, dress your nails in Witches Claw or Howling Half Moon Mani:

Witches Claw:

  1. Begin with one coat of deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro base coat and let dry fully.
  2. Apply two thin coats of Respect over the entire nail, waiting 2 minutes to dry and capping the tips of the nail after each coat.
  3. Wait one hour for nails to fully dry. Then, cut low-tack blue painters tape into a triangle shape and place in the center of the nail. The triangle should be placed where the pointed tip is at the top edge of your nail and is wider at the base.
  4. Paint the exposed sides of your nail with Miss Independent, then carefully lift the painters tape – do not wait for Miss Independent to dry.
  5. Finish the look with deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro top coat.

Products Used:

  • deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro Base and Top Coat (sold as a set) – $45.00
  • deborah lippmann Respect Nail Lacquer (Limited Edition for Fall/Winter 2015-16) – $18.00
  • deborah lippmann Miss Independent Nail Lacquer (Limited Edition for Fall/Winter 2015-16) – $18.00

A Howling Half Moon Mani:

Begin with one coat of deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro base coat and let dry fully.

  1. Apply two thin coats of Fade to Black over the entire nail, waiting 2 minutes to dry and capping the tips of the nail after each coat.
  2. Using a nail art detail brush (or the bottle brush if you have a steady hand), paint a half-moon at the base of the nail with Can’t Be Tamed glitter lacquer.
  3. While that dries, apply Ruby Red Slippers over the tip of your nail, gradually dragging the glitter down towards the middle of your nail to create a subtle gradient. Add a second swipe of Ruby Red Slippers just across the tips of your nails to create a more intense glitter ombre effect.
  4. Finish the look with deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro top coat.

Products Used:

  • deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro Base and Top Coat (sold as a set) – $45.00
  • deborah lippmann Fade to Black Nail Lacquer – $18.00
  • deborah lippmann Can’t Be Tamed Nail Lacquer (Limited Edition for Fall/Winter 2015-16) – $20.00
  • deborah lippmann Ruby Red Slippers Nail Lacquer – $20.00

Counting Down to the Spa Week $50 Treatments

As you can probably tell by all the tweets, Instagram, and Facebook posts, New York Fashion Week is upon us. This is the season where we give up our lives for a week or so to worship the Spring collections of the fashion gods, and would-be gods (shout out to the upcoming designers). As you can imagine, the strenuous activity of running all over New York from show location to show location in heels (and this unbearable heat) can take a toll on one’s skin, body, hair, etc. This is why we’re so looking forward to some pampering during the upcoming Spa Week, October 12th – 18th, which can’t get here soon enough. Are you ready for the Spa Week $50 Treatments?

spa week october

Spa Week has been around for eleven years, so we’re pretty sure you are familiar with it, but just in case you’re not, here’s a little insight: Spa week is a week-long event that happens twice a year and offers some of the most indulgent spa treatments, from facials to massages, hair removal, waxing, and so on, for only $50 each.  Every April and October, hundreds of spa and wellness locations across the US provide two to three full-service spa treatments at this wonderfully low price. This limited time discounted rate offers everyone access to luxurious pampering that they possibly couldn’t afford at their regular rate. This is the perfect time to treat yourself or a loved one to a few hours of pampering. A Spa Week treatment makes a wonderful gift for anyone without destroying your budget.

With thousands of spa & wellness facilities nationwide, finding a spa near you is easy. Log on to the Spa Week website to search for $50 spa treatments using your city and state or zip code, book an appointment for your favorite Spa Week $50 treatments online at www.SpaWeek.com, or by calling your spa of choice, go in for your appt, and enjoy your treatment…it’s that easy. You may find yourself taking advantage and booking more than one treatment. At this low price, that’s a wise decision. Once we’re done with New York Fashion Week, we may need a massage, pedicure, and facial; the fact that we can get all three for less than the price of a great facial is amazing in itself.

So take it from us, you don’t want to miss out. We highly recommend you take full advantage of this week of affordable decadence, your body, mind and spirit will thank you; so book your appointments now! We’re really looking forward to these treatments and can’t wait to indulge. Are you looking forward to Spa week? What Spa Week $50 treatments would you get?

Getting Gorgeous for New York Fashion Week at the Angelo David Salon

Thanks once again to the Angelo David Salon, we had the opportunity to enjoy a day of glam during the stressful days of New York Fashion Week. we were treated to our now usual fabulous blowout, courtesy of Ivy, who did our hair in February, and our usual amazing manicure from Marjana, who’s now pampered our nails four times now. My glam process started with getting my hair cleansed and prepped by Ivy, snacking on delicious Popchips, enjoying a lovely glass of white wine, and a hand massage with L’Occitane En Provence’s world-famous Shea Butter Hand Cream from Marjana.

Next up was our great fall-inspired manicure with Essie’s Fall 2014 Dress To Kilt Collection. We decided to pair Essie’s “Fall in Line”, an enigmatic jade green with “The Perfect Cover Up”, a powerful peacock teal.

The visit to Angelo David Salon was a welcome break and rescue from the madness of NYFW and we highly recommend you pay a visit to get pampered. Huge thanks to Ivy (pictured above), Lawlor Media group, and the Angelo David Salon for the pampering.

Gorgeous Hair & Nails for NYFW at Angelo David Salon

Although the weather tried to prevent us from being fabulous (Mother Nature did win the battle a few times), we still got to enjoy fabulous hair courtesy of the Angelo David Salon. This was certainly not the first time we’ve gotten great hair at this upscale salon for great hair – Couture Hair Color at The Angelo David Salon – and it definitely won’t be the last. Along with a few others, we were invited to get “Fashion Week Fab” and enjoy a little glam time, with a manicure and blow dry (using Angelo David’s hair nurturing products). While getting shampooed, my nails were being shaped and pampered with Essie’s No More Film, a creamy, seductively dark violet nail color.

For hair, it was all about hair detoxing, getting rid of hair product and city residue and giving our strands the beautiful life they’ve been missing by being held prisoner in nothing but ponytails and winter hats. It was time for hair that was free-flowing. Supplied with some good white wine and dishing on all things beauty, our hair was transformed to feathery light layers full of body and shine (mine is below), we were ready for fashion week.

The following wonderful Angelo David products were used on my hair – VOL Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner, Vital Complex Leave-in Conditioner and Smooth Fast Drying Hair Cream, all of which can be purchased at the salon or online.

Whether you’re looking for a color change or color refresher, you must pay a visit to the Angelo David Salon, conveniently located near Grand Central. Visit the  Angelo David Salon for more information.
