Women Are Ditching the Dye in Favor of Going Gray With Grace

By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss. But for many women, going gray has often been seen as the equivalent to balding. And though a lot of women will still reach for a box of dye or make regular appointments with a stylist to ensure their grays are well-covered, it’s becoming more popular for women to go au naturale and to embrace the gray in a self-love power move heard ’round the world.

Yes, dyed silver and gray tresses were a trend on Instagram not too long ago. But now, women are more inclined to give up the extra maintenance and let their locks go. Grombé, a relatively new Instagram account that celebrates women who are in the midst of their gray hair transition, has grown to amass 74,000 followers and counting. Celebrities are starting to embrace their grays as well, as Jessica Biel and Katie Holmes have recently walked the red carpet with streaks of natural silver showing. And while many women (and stylists) are still decidedly anti-gray, representation is growing — and that’s typically an important first step to widespread acceptance.

But why do we even go gray in the first place? We tend to fear gray hair because we don’t want to get old, but gray hairs often start to appear on women in their 20s and 30s. Achromotrichia, the process of hair turning gray and then white, often starts around this time. Race and other genetic components are typically what determines when and how much of your hair starts to turn. Nutritional factors can play a role, as can stress — which may be why regular exercise is a good idea. Partaking in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times per week can also improve cardiovascular health, which is a win/win for many women. Gray hair does tend to be drier due to decreased oil production, which is another reason to follow a protein-rich diet, stay hydrated, use moisturizing products, and stay active.
Ultimately, the gray hair movement is still (ironically) in its infancy. But if the growing popularity of these communities is any indication, it’s about time women were able to opt out of society’s unrealistic and expensive expectations of conventional beauty and start embracing their natural allure.

P&G Embraces EWG VERIFIED Label For Personal Care Products

Change Is Brewing: The EWG VERIFIED Label marks a huge leap forward in chemical ingredient disclosure. Now, industry giant Procter & Gamble is embracing the label.

A YouGov Ombibus survey about New Year’s Resolutions found that 29% of women wanted to focus more on self-care. Unfortunately, the personal care products we use to pamper ourselves aren’t always great for our body or the environment.

There are innumerable beauty and personal care products available to us. There’s a product for everything you could possibly need. Actually, there are multiple products for everything you could possibly need. Acne affects 50 million people in the United States every year and if you look at acne treatment products, you’d be hard pressed to make a decision on one of the multitude. Every branch of personal care is like this.

Forever about consumable convenience, we’re swift to buy personal care products we don’t really know anything about. On average, people shed between 50 and 100 hairs every day. We’re often thinking about keeping that full head of hair over the chemical ingredients of the shampoo; all for the promise of thicker hair in just a few washes. You’d think that an essential part of personal care is paying attention to the things we’re using; but more often than not, consumers can’t be bothered.

This is where consumer product giant Procter and Gamble (P&G) is making a splash with the Environmental Working Group (EWG). For more than 10 years, EWG has been the face of chemical ingredient disclosure in personal care products. They established the EWG VERIFIED program, which puts personal care products through a rigorous battery of tests to ensure the safety of every ingredient. This test also helps to make these ingredients transparent to consumers. P&G has teamed up with EWG to release two new Herbal Essences shampoos that are both EWG VERIFIED. They are slated to hit shelves in January.

This is important, because the last time Congress passed any legislation to regulate the cosmetics industry, was 80 years ago. Advances in chemical development have certainly surpassed the reach of legislation that’s nearly a century old; no one was doing anything to address that gap. Together, P & G and EWG are poised to lead that charge.

“Because of Procter and Gamble’s sheer size and market share, these new EWG VERIFIED shampoos could be the domino that triggers similar actions from other companies that have not yet embraced this level of transparency,” said EWG President Ken Cook.

Having a giant like P & G lead this charge stands to make great changes in an industry long stagnant. Similarly, with consumers becoming more aware of what they’re buying and more research-informed, they’re shaping the way for these corporations to start getting their acts together. Consumers want healthier, more transparent products and they’re willing to go out of their way to buy them. Corporations would be silly not to follow that lead. The proverbial writing’s on the wall.

“EWG VERIFIED will take awareness about chemicals in products to the next level by giving shoppers useful information from a team of scientists they have come to trust. Only products that include robust ingredient labels and meet our stringent criteria, as opposed to minimal government standards, will be awarded our mark,” said Nneka Leiba, the director of EWG’s healthy living science program.

As EWG VERIFIED products become more mainstream, hopefully, lawmakers will get the memo and take a long overdue look at regulations in the cosmetic industry.

20 Years of NaturallyCurly and a Spectacular Texture on the Runway Show

Now that NYFW the Shows is over, we can finally share the amazing shows and events we enjoyed. Funny enough, our first show had all to do with hair fashion than clothing (although we saw some pretty cool fashions). We always look forward to the start of fashion week. Not just for the incredible runway shows we anticipate attending but because NYFW debuts with the NaturallyCurly Texture on the Runway Show. The incredible hair show, presented by NaturallyCurly and Sally Beauty, is a celebration of the beauty of natural hair. This year’s runway show brands included Camille Rose Naturals, Cantu, Carol’s Daughter, Creme of Nature, Mielle Organics, SheaMoisture, and The Mane Choice.

This year’s Texture on the Runway show was also a celebration of NaturallyCurly’s 20th anniversary. Hosted by NaturallyCurly co-founder Michelle Breyer, and recording artist and breakout star of Love & Hip Hop Miami Amara La Negra, the seven top texture brands showcased their take on texture down the runway.

Cantu brought the vibrancy of New Orleans to the NaturallyCurly Texture on the Runway stage. Cantu’s presentation was to celebrate the textured hair movement and their dedicated and hardworking team.

Carol’s Daughter

For Carol’s Daughter, it was all about the bond between mother and child and one thing that connects a black woman and her daughter is hair. They recreated these special moments shared between, mother, and child by using models that are actually family, including Lisa Price and her daughter. We also got a chance to get to know the new Pracaxi Nectar Collection, a styling line made with natural Pracaxi Oil, the conditioning “miracle” nectar of Brazil.

Creme of Nature

Creme of Nature highlighted how culture is redefining the future of universal style and texture…with a bold look at Afrofuturism. Their runway presentation celebrated the Afro-Punk Urban Queen” with cutting-edge hairstyles by celebrity hairstylist Pekela Riley. How fearless she is in her diverse expression of edgy street fashion, multicultural hairstyling and glow up beauty.  They also introduced their new Pure Honey collection. A range that targets dry, dehydrated hair to provide essential moisture, softness, and smoothness without weighing your hair down.

Mielle Organics

Mielle Organics hit the runway with an edgy presentation that brought the brand to life. Hairstyles and looks were crafted and inspired by the woman warriors of Wakanda. The edgy hairstyles were styled using Mielle Organics’ Pomegranate and Honey collection. Honey is definitely a big haircare ingredient for natural hair and you can expect more brands to follow.

SheaMoisture

SheaMoisture showcased the beauty and versatility of textured hairstyles created with their award-winning legacy collection, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Hair Care. The runway presentation featured stunning styles that demonstrate the many dimensions and beauty of textured hair.

The Mane Choice

The Mane Choice celebrated the goddesses and their hair crowns. The colorful hairstyles celebrated all hair textures; and showed how the hair brand is continuing efforts in taking strides to empower and offer hair care solutions.


As previously stated, musician Amara La Negra (and her epic afro) performed for the natural hair beauties at the NaturallyCurly Presents Texture On The Runway show.
