7 Ways to Reduce Your Wrinkles Without Surgery

7 Ways to Reduce Your Wrinkles Without Surgery

No matter how much we try, we can’t escape the fact that time continues to tick on. And as the years go by, our bodies often start to show the signs of aging. But while the gradual development of facial wrinkles may be somewhat inevitable, that doesn’t mean you have to accept this fate when you’re still in your prime.

In other words, there are a number of things you can do to prevent and reduce wrinkles. What’s more, you don’t have to rely on surgical procedures to do it. Although there were 4 million cosmetic procedures performed nationwide in 2017, it’s not necessary to go under the knife to preserve your youthful appearance. Here are just seven tips that can help you fight the signs of aging — naturally.

7 Ways to Reduce Your Wrinkles Without Surgery

Always Wear Sunscreen

Fine lines and wrinkles can often be attributed to sun damage, so it makes sense that you’d want to protect your skin from harmful rays. Aside from reducing your sun exposure altogether, you should always take care to wear sunscreen on your face — even during the winter, on cloudy days, and when you don’t plan on setting foot outdoors. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers an SPF of 30 or higher to properly protect your skin. One study showed that applying this type of sunscreen for a year improve skin texture, clarity, and hyperpigmentation by 52% for participants. Of course, wearing sunscreen can also prevent skin damage and potentially alleviate your skin cancer risk.

Apply Moisturizer and a Retinoid

Sunscreen isn’t the only facial product you should apply on a daily basis. A daily (or twice daily) moisturizer can help your skin retain moisture; since dry skin is more likely to show or develop wrinkles, you’ll want to keep your face hydrated. It’s also a good idea to use a retinoid, which is a vitamin A derivative. Retinoids can increase collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, encourage cell turnover, and create new blood vessels — all of which can improve your complexion.

Remember to Hydrate

You can’t rely on your topical moisturizer to do all of the work. You’ll also need to hydrate from the inside out. Drinking water can help with virtually every function in the body, including toxin removal, but it also makes a huge difference in the appearance of your skin. Studies have found that higher water intakes can keep the skin hydrated, and we know that hydrated skin simply looks better. If you really want to achieve that glow-up, you should focus on how much H2O you’re drinking each day.

Use a Jade Roller

You might have seen jade rollers on social media, but they aren’t a new trend. Jade rolling has been around for centuries and was originally used to balance chi or energy. But it also has a cooling effect on the skin, which has a lot of purported benefits. Jade rollers can reportedly brighten the complexion, promote blood circulation, and reduce puffiness. They can also make it easier for skincare products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which can prevent wrinkles in a more roundabout way. Although they can’t handle the wide temperature range of a load cell and torque sensor unit (which can operate between -452 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit), these rollers can even be refrigerated with other skincare products to provide an even greater cooling sensation on the skin.

Get Lots of Sleep

It may not sound like brilliant skincare advice, but getting enough shut-eye can do wonders for your appearance. When you’re running low on sleep, your body will actually produce more cortisol. Known as the stress hormone, cortisol is also responsible for breaking down skin cells. That explains why your skin tends to freak out when you’re under emotional strain. If you prioritize your beauty sleep, however, you’ll see that it really does live up to its name. As a result, you’ll produce more human growth hormone (or HGH), which can strengthen and elasticize the skin, making wrinkles less likely to develop.

Cut Out Your Vices

Since we’re approaching the end of the year, it’s a good time to think about setting resolutions. If your main goal is to improve the look of your skin in 2021, you might consider cutting out some of your unhealthy vices — like smoking and drinking alcohol. Both of these habits will dehydrate the skin and make your wrinkles more noticeable. Plus, anything that attacks your system from the inside is bound to show up on your face. Keep in mind that this is especially important during the ongoing pandemic, as these habits can lower your immune system and make it harder to fight off infections!

Revamp Your Diet

You’ve probably heard the expression, “you are what you eat.” And while that doesn’t mean you need to completely cut out comfort food, it’s a good idea to turn to Mother Nature when you want to improve your skin. Make sure to add foods rich in omega-3s (like salmon and flaxseed) to your diet, as this can keep your skin looking its best. And since vitamin C is also a good source of collagen and antioxidants can help protect skin cells from toxins, it pays to focus on fresh fruits and veggies, like citrus fruit, bell peppers, melons, berries, Brussels sprouts, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, leafy greens, and more. If you can eat the rainbow, you’ll start to see the effects on your skin! Foods that contain soy can also improve skin appearance for some people while swapping coffee out for dark chocolate can keep your skin more hydrated and improve circulation.

Now that you know how to prevent wrinkles with these simple and natural lifestyle changes, you may be able to avoid the need for more serious treatments. While not all skin issues can be solved with these tips, you may see a marked improvement — and may be able to keep those wrinkles at bay for years to come.

Seasonal Tips for Promoting Your Own Wellbeing

Health & Wellness: Seasonal Tips for Promoting Your Own Wellbeing

Despite how trivial it may seem to care for your health, the fact of the matter is that it’s incredibly important. Caring for yourself is one of the best things you can do because you are promoting your own wellbeing. If you’re hoping to be your best self this new year, here are some tips you can follow for each season to stay on top of your health.

Seasonal Tips for Promoting Your Own Wellbeing

This Winter

As the winter air brings dryness and cracked skin, you’re going to want to make sure you’re moisturizing and using lotion more often around this time. Even kids can suffer from dry skin in the winter. If you’re a parent and have a child who is among the one in 10 kids who develop eczema, be sure to help them stay moisturized as well. Lotioning, where the dry skin is the worst, will be extremely important for overall comfort throughout the day.

Similarly, making sure you’re moisturizing your skin when the weather is extra dry will be beneficial for you in the long run. If you hope to avoid wrinkled skin in your later years, moisturizing regularly will help you to achieve this. Don’t forget your neck!

Though the air is extra dry in the winter months, it’s still important to try and get outdoors and enjoy the cool air. It’s easy to stay inside all winter and avoid the cold, but it’s important for your overall physical and mental health to get outdoors and stay active. Aim for at least one outing a week you wouldn’t normally do.

Next Summer

In the summer months, it’s super important for the protection of your skin to wear sunscreen. A study performed by IMPACT Melanoma found that 86% of participants use sunscreen “always” or “sometimes” in the summer. Wearing sunscreen is a very smart habit to get into. The sun’s rays are very powerful and can cause damage to our skin including various types of skin cancer. For this reason, wearing sunscreen is critical to protecting your skin while outdoors.

While wearing sunscreen is important during the height of summer, you should still apply it year-round. In the winter months, it’s really easy to assume that sunscreen isn’t necessary because you’re mostly covered anyway. The fact is, however, that the sun is still dangerous for our skin in the winter. As a result, applying sunscreen on your face is still a smart idea.

Seasonal Changes

As the seasons change, it’s very likely you’ll experience some seasonal allergies. In the spring and fall especially, make sure you’re taking the necessary precautions. Whether that is avoiding certain areas altogether or more routinely taking your allergy medicine, you’ll want to be on top of it. There are more than 3 million cases per year in the United States of seasonal allergies so it’s very likely you are someone who has them.

Though this isn’t something that has a huge impact on your overall health, if you simply ignore your allergies it’s very likely you’ll have a less enjoyable time all around. It can also drain your energy to constantly feel like your head is exploding. Not only that, but a cracked, irritated nose from constantly blowing it not only causes some aesthetic concerns but is uncomfortable to deal with. Avoid this by caring for yourself!

This also means making sure you’re taking time for yourself if your allergies become too much. Rest is an important aspect of self-care and your health overall. Be sure to know your limits and respect them.

There are a lot of different ways you can help care for your health. These tips should help you keep your skin and body feeling as good as possible. Make sure to prioritize yourself and your health throughout the year in order to live your best life.

Cosmetic Procedure Trends from 2019

Looking Back at Cosmetic Procedure Trends from 2019

The popularity of cosmetic surgery is soaring with people going to companies like The Dermatology and Laser Group to help them feel better about their appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), U.S. men and women underwent nearly 250,000 more cosmetic procedures in 2018 than the year before.

What explains this uptick in cosmetic procedure trends? Quite a few things might be at play. Here are just a few:

Cosmetic Procedure Trends from 2019

  • Greater acceptance. More people have had plastic surgery than ever before. Just last year, Americans went under the knife for 1.8 million cosmetic procedures. Knowing friends, families, and colleagues with positive plastic surgery experiences encourages others to do the same. Decades ago, vaccines were similarly taboo. After their widespread production and implementation in the 1940s, it is now completely normal to be vaccinated.
  • It is more and more affordable. Years ago, only the very well-to-do could afford cosmetic procedures to change or improve their appearance. Now it’s possible for stay-at-home moms or dual-income households to afford as well. Following a mastectomy, most health insurance providers cover breast reconstruction surgery for their clients. It is also much easier to find a reputable plastic surgeon closer to home nowadays too. For example, if you live in Boulder Valley, an online search can help you to locate a surgeon in your county.
  • A boost in self-confidence. Thanks to social media and image sharing platforms, picture taking and sharing is now the norm–not a tedious chore confined to holidays and family get-togethers. Most patients seek a cosmetic procedure to improve their confidence. Doing so can also improve his or her mental health as it alleviates worries and frees patients up to focus on other, more joyful things (i.e., not those few extra pounds or their especially large nose).
  • Technology continues coming through for surgeons and patients alike. Some of the first surgical procedures to improve appearances were relatively risky. Advances in technology have significantly cut down on these risks, making procedures safer than ever and speeding up average recovery times, too!

With the popularity and affordability on the rise, what are the most popular cosmetic surgeries?

Slimming Procedures

It’s becoming more and more difficult for Americans as a whole to watch our waistlines. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), just under 63% of men are overweight or obese, and women aren’t too far behind at 60%. While doing it the hard way may seem attractive initially, eating right and exercising gets a bad rap because…well, it’s difficult to maintain. Holidays, birthdays, busy schedules, and coworkers who won’t stop bringing in donuts and cookies at least once a week are everyday realities we face. It’s hard to be perfect. Plus, if you have more than five to 15 pounds to lose, waiting to see noticeable results can be discouraging and drive you back to old, unhealthy habits.

Procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks give you immediate results. Plus, it’s an especially good option for patients who are unhappy with their natural fat distribution. As you may know, you cannot spot reduce fat. In other words, even when you lose weight through diet and exercise, that weight will come off in certain areas depending on how your body naturally distributes fat. We would all love to pick and choose where these areas ideally would be. Liposuction gives you the opportunity to do that. This cosmetic procedure is common and safe with a relatively short recovery time. Over 220,000 Americans get liposuction every year.

Rhinoplasty

Your nose can change the entire look of your face and unfortunately, some of us have especially long noses, wide noses, or a pronounced bump or two on our noses. Ignoring the looks department, rhinoplasty and nose-altering cosmetic procedures can also provide practical benefits, like treating sleep apnea and difficulty breathing. This is why so many people choose to get the 8 West Clinic Rhinoplasty cosmetic procedure done. Rhinoplasty is rapidly growing in popularity and it’s easy to see why!

Enter nonsurgical rhinoplasty. In just 15 to 20 minutes, surgeons can inject patients with fillers that will correct nose shapes. That includes reshaping the bridge of the nose, the end of the nose, and changing the appearance of patients’ nostrils. It’s quick and nonsurgical. This popular alternative may require some maintenance or future injections to keep up the procedure’s benefits and appearance.

Botox

This is one that formerly may have had some negative connotations. Many assume Botox is used to smooth the skin, eliminate wrinkles, remove crow’s feet, and generally provide some of the same aesthetic benefits as a facelift. That is a common misconception! While Botox can do these things, it also has the potential to provide a number of surprising health benefits. Botox injections have been linked with a reduction in symptoms in chronic migraines, Bell’s Palsy, excessive perspiration, and even major depressive disorder (MDD). It can also possibly treat eyelid spasms and drooping eyelids, uncontrollable drooling, and spasmodic dysphonia, a disease that affects the vocal cords. Up to 80% of all Botox injections and similar filler treatments are intended to treat non-aesthetic problems, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

Botox, also a nonsurgical treatment, continues to grow in popularity. With its widespread benefits and growing affordability, it is even becoming more popular among men. Finally, young patients are taking full advantage of its cosmetic advantages. Young people are seeking fillers, Botox, and injectables to keep skin looking fresh and prevent literally going under the knife later in life. Procedures among this demographic, or specifically in patients under 30, have spiked by 72%, AAFPRS reports.

Otoplasty

What is otoplasty? Otoplasty is any cosmetic ear surgery, often meant to reshape, restructure, or resize the ear. It is a popular option for young children with ears that stick out so much it affects their quality of life. “Otoplasty can be done at any age after the ears have reached their full size–usually after age 5–through adulthood,” the Mayo Clinic writes. The surgery can also be used to fix injuries or deformities that result in a misshapen ear. Like other cosmetic procedures, otoplasty is becoming increasingly affordable. The average ear surgery costs just $3,154.

Every year, more and more Americans seek out nonsurgical cosmetic or surgical cosmetic procedures. Learn about new health benefits, safer technology, and greater affordability, and use that knowledge to choose the cosmetic procedure or procedures that may be best for you.

Herbal Essences EWG VERIFIED shampoos

P&G Embraces EWG VERIFIED Label For Personal Care Products

Change Is Brewing: The EWG VERIFIED Label marks a huge leap forward in chemical ingredient disclosure. Now, industry giant Procter & Gamble is embracing the label.

A YouGov Ombibus survey about New Year’s Resolutions found that 29% of women wanted to focus more on self-care. Unfortunately, the personal care products we use to pamper ourselves aren’t always great for our body or the environment.

There are innumerable beauty and personal care products available to us. There’s a product for everything you could possibly need. Actually, there are multiple products for everything you could possibly need. Acne affects 50 million people in the United States every year and if you look at acne treatment products, you’d be hard pressed to make a decision on one of the multitude. Every branch of personal care is like this.

Pretty young woman with facial mask at beauty salon

Forever about consumable convenience, we’re swift to buy personal care products we don’t really know anything about. On average, people shed between 50 and 100 hairs every day. We’re often thinking about keeping that full head of hair over the chemical ingredients of the shampoo; all for the promise of thicker hair in just a few washes. You’d think that an essential part of personal care is paying attention to the things we’re using; but more often than not, consumers can’t be bothered.

This is where consumer product giant Procter and Gamble (P&G) is making a splash with the Environmental Working Group (EWG). For more than 10 years, EWG has been the face of chemical ingredient disclosure in personal care products. They established the EWG VERIFIED program, which puts personal care products through a rigorous battery of tests to ensure the safety of every ingredient. This test also helps to make these ingredients transparent to consumers. P&G has teamed up with EWG to release two new Herbal Essences shampoos that are both EWG VERIFIED. They are slated to hit shelves in January.

Herbal Essences EWG VERIFIED shampoos

This is important, because the last time Congress passed any legislation to regulate the cosmetics industry, was 80 years ago. Advances in chemical development have certainly surpassed the reach of legislation that’s nearly a century old; no one was doing anything to address that gap. Together, P & G and EWG are poised to lead that charge.

“Because of Procter and Gamble’s sheer size and market share, these new EWG VERIFIED shampoos could be the domino that triggers similar actions from other companies that have not yet embraced this level of transparency,” said EWG President Ken Cook.

Having a giant like P & G lead this charge stands to make great changes in an industry long stagnant. Similarly, with consumers becoming more aware of what they’re buying and more research-informed, they’re shaping the way for these corporations to start getting their acts together. Consumers want healthier, more transparent products and they’re willing to go out of their way to buy them. Corporations would be silly not to follow that lead. The proverbial writing’s on the wall.

“EWG VERIFIED will take awareness about chemicals in products to the next level by giving shoppers useful information from a team of scientists they have come to trust. Only products that include robust ingredient labels and meet our stringent criteria, as opposed to minimal government standards, will be awarded our mark,” said Nneka Leiba, the director of EWG’s healthy living science program.

As EWG VERIFIED products become more mainstream, hopefully, lawmakers will get the memo and take a long overdue look at regulations in the cosmetic industry.

electric toothbrush and flosser

Waterpik Sonic-Fusion Toothbrush, the World’s First Flossing Toothbrush

Who knew that the road to better dental care would take us to the historic Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum? Waterpik hosted a wonderfully informative cocktail event, where guests were introduced to the world’s first and only all-in-one toothbrush and flosser, the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion Toothbrush. Now you can brush AND floss at the same time! That’s right, a flossing toothbrush now exists!! This is a groundbreaking step in oral care and perfect for a woman like me, who is ALWAYS short on time.

Backed by a beautiful view of the Hudson River from the Intrepid, guests were treated to cocktails and small bites, while reps Kendall Begier and Amy Motta displayed the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion Toothbrush in two colors: Classic (Gloss) White, and (Semi-Matte) Black. I immediately loved the size – as someone with lots of health and beauty products in my bathroom, and a veteran of small-space living, the Sonic-Fusion leaves a small footprint on your sink surface. Plus, its one-step use and its one-handed mode control for a healthier mouth pack quite a punch.

By merging the latest Waterpik Water Flosser and Sonic Toothbrush technologies, Sonic-Fusion enables brushing and flossing at the same time. As the sonic toothbrush head cleans tooth surfaces, the Water Flosser jet inside the brush head targets plaque and debris between teeth and below the gumline where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This flexible device also allows for brushing and flossing separately, with the touch of a button, and offers three cleaning modes: Brush, Floss, or Brush + Floss for flexibility.

The Sonic Fusion is said to be 2x as effective as regular brushing and flossing and removes 99.9% of plaque from treated areas. I HAD to try it for myself. For my first trial of The Waterpik life, I took it with me on a week-long trip to our nation’s capital! Perfect size for hotel surfaces because of the smaller footprint and the travel case for the brush and brush heads.  I offer all you guestlisters out there an unboxing and mini walk-through of my experience using the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion via Instagram Stories (IG: @saucywallflower)

Basically, I love this device.  I don’t remember having such a polished clean feeling in my mouth without feeling the pain of stringing teeth with floss and sensitive gums. Run out and get one for yourself!  Your dentist will love you, and you will love your checkups  – you know the part where when  your dentist asks you the dreaded question “Have you been flossing regularly?” you can proudly and loudly say, “YES!” You will love this device for many reasons, including advanced water pressure control and 10 settings for custom comfort, a 2-minute brushing timer with a 30-second pacer, a reservoir capacity of 60+ seconds, a premium LED recharge indicator, with two patented Water Flossing brush heads and a deluxe toothbrush case included.

The Waterpik Sonic-Fusion Toothbrush retails for $199.99 and comes with a three-year warranty and is accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA). Get your own on www.waterpik.com/sonic-fusion.
