Patron 2019 Margarita of the Year Contender

Will The Golden Hour Margarita Win 2019 Margarita Of The Year?

Patrón Tequila hosted a happy hour being held at The Archer Bar in Jersey City to kick off the Margarita of the Year competition. We had the pleasure of tasting one of the competing cocktails before we voted for our favorite. Of course, it was easy to select Bartender Natalie Jacob’s Golden Hour Margarita as our favorite. The decadent cocktail mesmerized our tastebuds with its inspiring mix of ingredients.

The Golden Hour Margarita is one of eight contenders vying for the title of The Margarita of the Year. Natalie and the seven other masters of margaritas hope to entice judges with their mixology skills to win the coveted title. We loved the Golden Hour Margarita for several reasons; we love the use of turmeric (it doesn’t magically make it a “healthy cocktail”, but in our heads it does); we love the combination of the earthiness, sweetness, and slight heat that the cocktail’s ingredients brought.

We also love how dangerously easy it all went down (thankfully the wonderful cocktail didn’t call for any “hair of the dog the next day, despite us enjoying five (keep the judging to the cocktails). Check out the full recipe below. Trust us, you will want to recreate it at home. If you’re not skilled behind the bar, Cocktail Courier will happily send you all you need to recreate this delicious cocktail.

Golden Hour Margarita

Bartender: Natalie Jacob/New York City

Patron 2019 Margarita of the Year Contender

1.5 oz Patrón Reposado
.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
1 oz. Fresh pineapple juice
.5 oz Fresh lime juice
.25 oz Turmeric agave syrup*
+ Salt/turmeric/chili pepper rim
+ Pineapple wedge for garnish

*Turmeric agave syrup:
2 cups agave
1 cup water
2 tbsp. turmeric powder
Add agave, water, and turmeric to a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently to incorporate the turmeric. Let cool and strain into a sealable bottle.

This drink can be shaken and served on the rocks or frozen. Rim a rocks glass with a mixture of equal parts salt, turmeric, and chili pepper. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker or blender to combine. Pour into a rocks glass (filled with ice if you used a shaker). Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

We must also give major points to The Archer Bar for their amazing and inventive bar fare. Our Golden Hour Margaritas were made even more enjoyable with the addition of the Buffalo Maple Duck Wings & Waffle and the Bison “Jucy Lucy” Sliders.

The Archer Bar Fare - Buffalo maple Duck Wings & Waffle The Archer Bar Fare - Bison Sliders

If you love heat and spice, the Duck Wings will answer your prayers in satisfactory spades. Burger fans will love the double dose of dill in the Bison Sliders from the Dill Havarti cheese and Horseradish dill spread. In all honesty, we were expecting the typical bar food when we arrived and praise the culinary gods for surprising us with such decadence.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on Natalie Jacob’s margarita and of course, we can’t wait to hear which margarita will be crowned 2019 Margarita of the Year on April 25th.

Perfect Holiday Gifting with Patron Tequila 1-Liter Limited Edition Bottle

Do you know what is one of the most-gifted spirits during the holidays? It’s Patron tequila of course! And this year, Patron, one of the most-recognized and respected luxury spirits brands, has once again introduced a limited edition one-liter bottle. Perfect for holiday gifting, the Patron Tequila 1-Liter Limited Edition bottle, third in a series of collectible, large-size bottle designs, is inspired by Mexico’s tradition of vibrant ceramic and textile folk art. If you want to perfect the art of gift giving and holiday entertaining, gift your favorite person the Patron Tequila 1-Liter Limited Edition bottle. Give the gift that keeps on giving with 33% more Patron tequila from the 1-Liter bottle.

The brightly colored pewter bottle label on this year’s special edition release features Patron’s iconic bee design and depicts elements of Patron’s meticulous production process. It boasts renderings of the native Weber Blue Agave from which Patron is created, the razor-sharp ax used to chop the harvested agave, and the traditional “tahona” stone which crushes the cooked agave to begin the fermentation and distillation process. The Patron Tequila 1-Liter Limited Edition bottle is topped with an intricately designed metallic stopper, mirroring the detailed aesthetic of the label, and is packaged in a beautiful green gift bag, reminiscent of Patron Silver’s signature box.

“Patron is always one of the most-gifted spirits during the holidays and our limited-edition large size bottle has become something that people look forward to every year, both as a gift for someone special, and for holiday entertaining,” said Lee Applbaum, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Patron Spirits. “The distinctive label design of this year’s bottle – influenced by our rich Mexican tradition of crafting artisanal tequila – offers a truly unique gifting option for those who enjoy and appreciate high-quality luxury spirits.”

Patron has you covered when it comes to perfect holiday cocktails. This season, try the Daylight Saver (made with Patrón Silver tequila, Patron Citrónge Orange liqueur, Lillet Blanc, fresh lime, and a touch of absinthe) or the tart and refreshing Cranberry Cooler (combining Patrón Silver tequila, Patrón Citrónge Lime liqueur, cranberry juice, and club soda).

The Patron Tequila 1-Liter Limited Edition bottle is available at fine spirits and liquor retailers across the country for a steal at $59.99.

Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro Collaborate for National Tequila Day

Art comes in many forms, sometimes it’s stunningly visual, other times deliciously artistic. In this instance, the collaboration between an acclaimed filmmaker and renowned tequila brand, it is both. Launching today on International Tequila Day is the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro collaboration, an exquisite and artistic package which houses two bottles (both extraordinary blends of Patron aged spirits). We’ll also be sharing two great Patron tequila cocktail recipes for you to indulge in today, and beyond.

The outer package in the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro piece, Guillermo del Toro designed a stark, matte black cover that peels away to reveal a box with carefully detailed black and silver drawings. These drawings were inspired by the “jimadores,” the skilled laborers in Mexico who for generations have hand-harvested and trimmed the Weber Blue Agave that creates tequila. The images depict skeletons (one of del Toro’s favorite expressions of the Mexican cultural celebration of life and death) working in the agave fields, where tequila is born. The original sketches, initial artwork, personal introductions from del Toro and Francisco Alcaraz, as well as information and images about the tequila production process, and cocktail recipes for the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro project are included in a hardcover book, “Tomo de la Creación,” inside the box.  The case then opens and unfolds to expose a warm red and orange color palate inside, in stark contrast to the black and silver exterior of the box. The beautiful and mysterious labyrinth of imagery furthers del Toro’s narrative, with illustrations of the Hacienda Patrón distillery in the Highlands of Jalisco, where agave is transformed into Patrón tequila.

The most striking detail inside the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro box is the centerpiece glass bottle, which upon closer examination reveals not one, but actually two bottles. It resembles what looks like a fantastical winged creature straight out of one of del Toro’s iconic films. A limited-edition 750ml bottle of extra añejo tequila sits upside down as the “torso,” while the second, a 100ml bottle of aged orange liqueur, sits on top, a skull exquisitely carved into the crystal. The spirit in the larger bottle is a remarkable blend of rare Patrón tequilas aged for an average of more than five years in a combination of different new and used oak barrels. Complementing that tequila is the smaller bottle, a first-of-its-kind aged Patrón orange liqueur produced from aged Patrón tequila.

Patron X GDT in Guadalajara

The extra añejo tequila in the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro blend is characterized by its bright, golden color, with an aroma and flavor of light honey, nuts and raisins, slight vanilla, and oak. The sweet and fruity balanced taste makes way to a long finish of agave and oak. The orange liqueur is medium amber in color, with a distinctly sweet aroma and taste of citrus, clove, light French toast, and caramel. Only a very limited number of Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro sets were produced, and are currently available at fine spirits and liquor retailers across the country for the suggested retail price of $399.00. And now onto the cocktail recipes we promised. If you’re gifting yourself with the Patron Tequila X Guillermo del Toro set, you’ll love The Sacrifice cocktail created by Stephen Halpin. Already have Patron Reposado in your bar, try the delicious Jimadores Paloma cocktail.

Aren’t Pina Coladas made with rum? Yes, it’s true, they are traditionally made with rum but the golden hue and balance between the Agave and wood flavors make the reposado a good rum substitute. Besides, the words piña colada literally means “strained pineapple”, not rum and pineapple. So without further ado, let us show you how you can celebrate National Pina Colada Day with Patrón Tequila. Feast your eyes on the glory that is the Patron Mini Pineapple Piña Colada.

Coralina Margarita Crowned Patron Tequila’s 2017 Margarita of the Year!

It seems so long ago that we shared the amazing event that was the Patrón Tequila 2017 Margarita of the Year event and competition. Seven bartenders from around the world battled it out with their take on a modern margarita, check out our Exclusive Patron Margaritas for International Margarita Day coverage. After enjoying all of their creations, guests voted for their favorites and left the final decisions to the illustrious judges. Well, the votes have been tallied and a decision has been made. After a long deliberation (the event was two months ago), Patron Tequila finally has their 2017 Margarita of the Year winner. And the winner is……. the Coralina Margarita, created by Mexico City bartender Riesler Morales.

Razorfish – Patron

1.75 oz Patrón Reposado
.75 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
.75 oz Simple syrup
1 oz Fresh lime juice
.5 oz Red Wine (Mexican, or other)
+ Sugar-salt rim*
Combine Patrón Reposado, Patrón Citrónge Orange, simple syrup and lime juice in a shaker tin; add ice and shake vigorously. Strain mixture into a chilled cocktail coupe rimmed with sugar-salt rim.* Carefully float red wine on the surface of the cocktail and garnish with a lime wheel.

*Sugar-salt rim:
Pulverize .25 cup dried hibiscus (that’s a flower for those not in the know) in a spice grinder. Add in a .25 cup of sugar and a .25 cup kosher salt, then pulse the mixture until combined.

Riesler wanted to craft a cocktail that had the simplicity and elegance of a classic Margarita, but with the interesting and unexpected ingredients that marry so nicely with Patrón tequila (check out the man in action in the photo above). The Coralina Margarita was inspired by an ocean sunset (that’s easy to see with its dual colors that mirror the sky at sundown), combining the oaky notes of Patrón Reposado, perfectly balanced with the citrusy flavors of Patrón Citrónge Orange, together with red wine and hibiscus.

Cocktail lovers, you’ll definitely want to try this winning cocktail. You should definitely check out the recipe above. This margarita was a favorite, definitely in our top five. We want to know, is this the winner you predicted? Share your thoughts on the Patrón Tequila 2017 Margarita of the Year winner with us.
