Giving Thanks to Friendship: Celebrating Friendsgiving with Basil Hayden’s

It occurred to me the other day that I’m the only one in my immediate clique that lives in New York City. The others in my caravan live across the pond in Jersey. While the city unites us for various events and revelries, quite often there has to be a good reason to stay late in the city, venture out into the depths of lower Manhattan or justify a late night uber home. Now while the very natures of our friendships are enough, let’s face that with the annoying hustle and frustrating bustle of our day-to-day, some days you have to relinquish your good intended presence to just being there in spirit. Outside of just hanging out, some people may be cajoled to find further justification in dancing the night away, seeing a sold-out show or catching a must-see movie. However, my friends all have seasoned palettes and nothing gets us together more than good eats, great energy and anchoring the deal with top-shelf cocktails.

So when I got the invitation to spend the birthday of one of my dearest friends with one of my favorite whiskey brands, the pot was sweetened and the seal of approval was stamped. The satisfying Basil Hayden’s, that beloved and delectably slick bourbon kicked off the season on November 1st with a pretty amazing Friendsgiving in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Held at the posh event space 501 Union, upon entering I knew why the trip to BK for this Bronx guy was worth it. The bar was serving up unique cocktails curated for the event that showcased just how wonderful Basil Hayden’s is. Their Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey is very smooth, has just the right amount of sweetness and packs enough weight to flavorfully hold its own when paired with other cocktail ingredients and spirits. However, don’t just take my word for it. Here are the cocktails that were on tap for that memorable evening:

First up was the Basil Hayden’s Boulevardier. I tried it with their bourbon and combined with the bitter Aperol and the herbal sweet vermouth it made for such a balanced drink. The mild espresso-like bitterness of the licorice-like Aperol played up to the bourbon so nicely. Next up was the Basil Hayden’s Highball, which I also requested with their bourbon. The lightness from the club soda and the citrusy sweet kick from the lemon soda created a light and refreshing almost summery cocktail with a herbal grown edge from the presence of the basil.

After two bourbon-centered cocktails, I needed to try one of their latest offerings, Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye. Perfect on the rocks, the dark rye has less sweetness naturally and more of a distinguished oaky spicy weight, but no less smooth and delicious. This was a perfect wind-down of a sipper before dinner.

Dinner featured two new cocktails for each course. The Ward Eight wonderfully combined their bourbon, the citrus power of grenadine, lemon and orange together with the refreshing cooling pop of mint for a clean sipper that evoked a great spiked Summer lemonade. Finishing up was the Havoc In Nelson County, a surprisingly island-fresh cocktail that took the wonderful rarely seen flavor of banana and mixed it with orange bitters for a flavorful, diverse drink that hits several areas of the palette pleasantly with soothingly familiar notes. Speaking of dinner, our culinary journey, heralded by Chef Paul Donnelly, boasted offerings similar to the Basil Hayden’s Friendsgiving at Peachy’s: an appetizer of Strange Flavor Burrata; a first course of Steamed Baby Branzino and Northern Chinese Style Roasted Golden Beets; a second course of Crispy Lamb Ribs and Salad of Watercress with assorted vegetables; and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. What the evening with Basil Hayden’s recreated was the makings of classic friendship lore. The drinks were flowing, the food was stellar and the energy was upbeat and positive. Despite the difficult time we are currently facing in America, we must always celebrate the small victories. The things and people that help build this melting pot of a country. The strength of this country is its so-called “blue collar workers”, and we must always celebrate the contributions these workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the U.S. What better way to do so than to raise a glass of Patron Tequila, preferably delicious margaritas, Palomas, and tiki cocktails. We’ve got some great Labor Day cocktails, made with Patron Tequila from Beverage Coordinators, Grace Kim of Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster, Mindy Kucan of the legendary Tiki bar Portland, Oregon, and Ravinder Singh of Rapscallion and Boulevardier in Dallas, Tx, and the Middle Branch bar in New York.

Labor Day Cocktails from Patrón Tequila

1.5oz Patrón Silver
.75oz Grapefruit juice
.5oz Giffard Pamplemousse liqueur
.5oz Watermelon juice, fresh squeezed, no pulp
.25oz Cucumber juice, fresh squeezed, no pulp
.25oz Lime juice
.25oz Agave syrup
.25oz Jalapeño shrub
2-3 dashes Grapefruit bitters
2-3 dashes Smoked chili bitters
Top with grapefruit soda or grapefruit IPA
Grapefruit salt-berbere rim*
Half slice of charred grapefruit and a skewer of cucumber cube and watermelon cube for garnish
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake to combine. Rim glass with grapefruit salt-berbere mixture.
Strain over crushed ice in a highball glass. Top with grapefruit soda or grapefruit IPA. Garnish with a half slice of charred grapefruit and a skewer of cucumber cube and watermelon cube.
*Grapefruit salt-bebere rim: Mix 2 tablespoons grapefruit salt with 1 teaspoon berbere spice

Labor Day Cocktails from Patrón Tequila

2 oz Patrón Silver
2 drops of Hellfire Habanero Shrub Bitters
.5 oz fresh lemon
1 oz fresh grapefruit
.375 oz Orgeat syrup
.375 oz Tamarind syrup
Shake all ingredients in shaker with ice, strain into hollowed out grapefruit half. Garnish with the other half of the grapefruit or grapefruit slice.

Patron Reposado Tiki Rita

Labor Day Cocktails from Patrón Tequila

2 oz Patrón Reposado
.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
.5 oz Fresh lime juice
.5 oz Fresh grapefruit juice
.25 oz Vanilla syrup
.25 oz Allspice Dram
Grated nutmeg for garnish
Lime wheel and cloves for garnish
Hawaiian sea salt rim
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to chill. Strain onto fresh crushed ice in a Tiki glass that has been rimmed with Hawaiian sea salt. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a lime wheel pierced with 3 cloves.

Blue Crush

2 oz Patrón Silver
2 oz Pineapple Juice
.75 oz Lemon Juice
.25 oz Demerara Syrup
.5 oz Blue Curacao
Pineapple ring for garnish
Orange peel for garnish
Pineapple leaf for garnish
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice and shake vigorously. Pour unstrained into a glass. Garnish with a pineapple ring, orange peel, and leaf.

Cheers to Campari and Imbibe Magazine’s Sixth Annual Negroni Week

Hello fellow Campari fans, we had a blast celebrating Campari and Imbibe Magazine’s Sixth Annual Negroni Week. This year’s Negroni Week kick-off party was everything we could have asked for and more. Not only did we indulge in a variety of specialty made Negroni cocktails, we thoroughly enjoyed the surprise pairing session and evening’s entertainment.

For the sixth annual Negroni Week, the Ragtrader was turned into the gateway to a Campari heaven, celebrating Italy’s iconic red Aperitivo and the global charity initiative. The main level of The Ragtrader featured four fun takes on the classic Negroni cocktail from NYC’s top bartenders, as well as servings of Negroni-inspired bites. We enjoyed the following cocktails: the Beyond Tiki Paradise Negroni created by Felicia Chin-Braxton, the Beyond Bitter New-Groni created by Daniel Warrilow, the Beyond Bubbles Thai Basil Sbagliato created by Stacey Swenson, and the I Bleed Negroni created by Anne Louise Marquis.

On the lower level, dubbed Club Negroni, there was an entire bar dedicated to one interactive activity – a Negroni and food pairing featuring three cocktails paired with a savory, sweet, and creamy amuse bouche.

The Club Negroni entertainment was wonderfully provided by a hilarious pianist who kept the crowd going with Hip Hop and Rap renditions. You couldn’t ask for better music while sipping on the almost unlimited flow of Negroni Week cocktails.

Today we’re sharing St. Patrick’s Day cocktails from Milagro Tequila. We know what you’re thinking, “Irish cocktails made with a Mexican spirit?”  Yes, and they are delicious! Milagro’s National Ambassador, Jaime Salas, has crafted some great St. Patrick’s Day inspired cocktails that will make you dance an Irish jig and probably shout, “kiss me, I’m Irish”, even though these libations are not made with traditional Irish spirits.

Today we present three curated cocktails. One cocktail whose name means shamrock in Spanish and is the perfect alternative to whiskey this St. Patrick’s Day! A tangy margarita that is a perfect drink to help get you Irish stepping on the dance floor! and a round of spicy shots that will make you feel like you have the luck of the Irish.

Del Campo Cocktail

1 ½ parts Milagro silver
½ part lime juice
¾ part celery juice
½ nopal (optional)
1 part pineapple juice
½ part cilantro or parsley
Chicharron Salt Garnish
With a half lime, rinse around the rim of a rocks glass and salt with Chicharron salt. Separately, combine all ingredients and shake well. Strain and mix over fresh ice into the salt-rimmed glass.

El Vocho Cocktail

4 parts Milagro Reposado
2 part Pineapple juice (tinned)
10 mint leaves
10 cilantro leaves
1 small jalapeno slice
In four shooter glasses, pour Milagro Reposado neat, Blend all other ingredients together. Strain and pour into four separate shooter glasses.

Trebol Cocktail

2 parts Milagro Silver
1 slice tomatillo
1 part lime juice
4 cucumber slices
1 pinch cilantro
1 slice jalapeno
1 pinch salt
Blend all ingredients without ice. Shake and strain into a tall glass with ice. Garnish with cucumber.
