Patron 2019 Margarita of the Year Contender

Will The Golden Hour Margarita Win 2019 Margarita Of The Year?

Patrón Tequila hosted a happy hour being held at The Archer Bar in Jersey City to kick off the Margarita of the Year competition. We had the pleasure of tasting one of the competing cocktails before we voted for our favorite. Of course, it was easy to select Bartender Natalie Jacob’s Golden Hour Margarita as our favorite. The decadent cocktail mesmerized our tastebuds with its inspiring mix of ingredients.

The Golden Hour Margarita is one of eight contenders vying for the title of The Margarita of the Year. Natalie and the seven other masters of margaritas hope to entice judges with their mixology skills to win the coveted title. We loved the Golden Hour Margarita for several reasons; we love the use of turmeric (it doesn’t magically make it a “healthy cocktail”, but in our heads it does); we love the combination of the earthiness, sweetness, and slight heat that the cocktail’s ingredients brought.

Patron 2019 Margarita of the Year Contender

We also love how dangerously easy it all went down (thankfully the wonderful cocktail didn’t call for any “hair of the dog the next day, despite us enjoying five (keep the judging to the cocktails). Check out the full recipe below. Trust us, you will want to recreate it at home. If you’re not skilled behind the bar, Cocktail Courier will happily send you all you need to recreate this delicious cocktail.

Golden Hour Margarita

Bartender: Natalie Jacob/New York City

Patron 2019 Margarita of the Year Contender

1.5 oz Patrón Reposado
.5 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
1 oz. Fresh pineapple juice
.5 oz Fresh lime juice
.25 oz Turmeric agave syrup*
+ Salt/turmeric/chili pepper rim
+ Pineapple wedge for garnish

*Turmeric agave syrup:
2 cups agave
1 cup water
2 tbsp. turmeric powder
Add agave, water, and turmeric to a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently to incorporate the turmeric. Let cool and strain into a sealable bottle.

This drink can be shaken and served on the rocks or frozen. Rim a rocks glass with a mixture of equal parts salt, turmeric, and chili pepper. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker or blender to combine. Pour into a rocks glass (filled with ice if you used a shaker). Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

We must also give major points to The Archer Bar for their amazing and inventive bar fare. Our Golden Hour Margaritas were made even more enjoyable with the addition of the Buffalo Maple Duck Wings & Waffle and the Bison “Jucy Lucy” Sliders.

The Archer Bar Fare - Buffalo maple Duck Wings & Waffle The Archer Bar Fare - Bison Sliders

If you love heat and spice, the Duck Wings will answer your prayers in satisfactory spades. Burger fans will love the double dose of dill in the Bison Sliders from the Dill Havarti cheese and Horseradish dill spread. In all honesty, we were expecting the typical bar food when we arrived and praise the culinary gods for surprising us with such decadence.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on Natalie Jacob’s margarita and of course, we can’t wait to hear which margarita will be crowned 2019 Margarita of the Year on April 25th.

Coralina Margarita Crowned Patron Tequila’s 2017 Margarita of the Year!

It seems so long ago that we shared the amazing event that was the Patrón Tequila 2017 Margarita of the Year event and competition. Seven bartenders from around the world battled it out with their take on a modern margarita, check out our Exclusive Patron Margaritas for International Margarita Day coverage. After enjoying all of their creations, guests voted for their favorites and left the final decisions to the illustrious judges. Well, the votes have been tallied and a decision has been made. After a long deliberation (the event was two months ago), Patron Tequila finally has their 2017 Margarita of the Year winner. And the winner is……. the Coralina Margarita, created by Mexico City bartender Riesler Morales.

Razorfish – Patron

1.75 oz Patrón Reposado
.75 oz Patrón Citrónge Orange
.75 oz Simple syrup
1 oz Fresh lime juice
.5 oz Red Wine (Mexican, or other)
+ Sugar-salt rim*
Combine Patrón Reposado, Patrón Citrónge Orange, simple syrup and lime juice in a shaker tin; add ice and shake vigorously. Strain mixture into a chilled cocktail coupe rimmed with sugar-salt rim.* Carefully float red wine on the surface of the cocktail and garnish with a lime wheel.

*Sugar-salt rim:
Pulverize .25 cup dried hibiscus (that’s a flower for those not in the know) in a spice grinder. Add in a .25 cup of sugar and a .25 cup kosher salt, then pulse the mixture until combined.

Riesler wanted to craft a cocktail that had the simplicity and elegance of a classic Margarita, but with the interesting and unexpected ingredients that marry so nicely with Patrón tequila (check out the man in action in the photo above). The Coralina Margarita was inspired by an ocean sunset (that’s easy to see with its dual colors that mirror the sky at sundown), combining the oaky notes of Patrón Reposado, perfectly balanced with the citrusy flavors of Patrón Citrónge Orange, together with red wine and hibiscus.

Cocktail lovers, you’ll definitely want to try this winning cocktail. You should definitely check out the recipe above. This margarita was a favorite, definitely in our top five. We want to know, is this the winner you predicted? Share your thoughts on the Patrón Tequila 2017 Margarita of the Year winner with us.

Recap: Patron Tequila Margaritas Custom Crafted by International Bartenders

To say we had a great time celebrating International Margarita Day with Patron Tequila is an understatement. Before we had a fantastic time honoring the day, we gave you guys a sneak peek at seven never before seen margarita recipes from across the globe, all of which we had the pleasure of enjoying at the Patron Tequila Margaritas celebration. The evening was nothing short of amazing, with a night full of spectacular cocktails, great music, and amazing eats.

Surrounded by all things Patron, including the very stylish ponchos worn by staff members (we so want one), we had the very difficult task of voting for our favorite Patron Tequila Margarita out of the seven amazing cocktails that were on-hand to indulge in. If you read our previous post which is linked at the beginning of this post, you note the margarita nominees for 2017’s Margarita of the Year were the creations of the following mixologists: Shaun Gordon of Truman Tavern, Hemant Pathak of Junoon, Mindy Kucan of Oregon, Alexander Kady of Denver, Reisler Morales of Mexico City, Sophie Bratt of England, and Max Greco of Australia. Our plan of attack was to just head down the line of stations and enjoy the margaritas one after the other.

Along with these amazing drinks, we indulged in the seven Patron Tequila Margaritas in popsicle form, thanks to Popbar and their handcrafted treat on a stick. All of the seven margaritas were perfectly duplicated in this delicious frozen treat.

As if the seven exclusive margaritas weren’t enough, we also had the opportunity to create our own, using our own choice of fresh fruit and other ingredients to our very own signature margarita using the onsite Patron Produce Market and available Bar Chefs. We’re not on the sam level as the above creative mixologists, but we think ours turned out pretty damn delicious.

Another treat for us was the introduction to what will surely be a huge hit with cocktail aficionados, Cocktail Courier, who delivers the world’s best cocktails, right to your door.

We ended the evening quite sated and happy and especially loved getting to take home a personalized Patron Tequila Hand Squeeze Juicer. For more photos from the event, check out our slideshow below:

Celebrate International Margarita Day with a “Margarita” Margherita Pizza

We have every intention of celebrating the upcoming International Margarita Day by drinking a round or two of delicious Margaritas but believe it or not, there are more ways to enjoying a margarita than just drinking one…….how about eating one. In celebration of International Margarita Day, February 22nd, Patrón Tequila has released the first-ever edible margarita pizza entitled the Platinum Margarita Margherita Pizza. Alcohol-infused food is not new, we personally grew up on the alcohol-soaked black cake, but we’re seeing this food trend making a big resurgence in culinary markets we hadn’t before. Just last year we enjoyed Patrón Tequila-infused ice cream and popsicles at their National Tequila Day event.

Here’s what you need to know about this mindblowing and one-of-a-kind pizza:

This amazing bit of delicious food art is inspired by the signature Patrón margarita and was customized by Chef Michael Armstrong of upscale Mexican hotspot, Bodega Negra, located inside the trendy Dream Downtown Hotel. The $500.00 Platinum Margarita Margherita Pizza is infused with Gran Patrón Platinum tequila (retail value, $200.00) and Patrón Burdeos (retail value, $500.00).  The colorful pizza pie boasts layers of the most insane, over-the-top toppings, such as Osetra caviar, black truffles, tomato, avocado, glazed lobster, and mango, both cooked in Patrón Burdeos, pickled onions, and crema-infused with Platinum Patrón. All perfectly layered on top of a thin, flour tortilla crust.

They say good things come to those who wait and anything good is worth waiting for, which is good because the Platinum Margarita Margherita Pizza takes 45 minutes to create,  and it must be ordered two days in advance. Enjoying this medium-sized culinary journey is ideal for a group of  2-3 friends, preferably accompanied with an equally delicious Patron Tequila Margarita, like the Tropicante Margarita, created by Alexander Kady of Denver, Colorado, which we will highlight in our Patron Margarita write up.

Fair warning folks, you can only partake in this indulgence until International Margarita Day; after February 22nd, the limited edition, Platinum “Margarita” Margherita Pizza is gone for good. Are you up to indulging in this indulgent first ever “Margarita” Margherita Pizza?

Patron Margarita of the Year: A Winner is Crowned

The time to select the Patron Margarita of the Year winner out of the top three has finally arrived and Patron celebrated the announcement with an amazing interactive experience that ended with a spicy favorite being crowned. Upon first entry, we were treated to ice cream versions of the three finalists’ margarita creations, as well as the classic margarita, the Hacienda Margarita by Andres Moran of Guadalajara, thanks to boozy ice cream makers, Tipsy Scoop.

After enjoying several scoops of the delicious boozy ice cream, we hit up each of the Patron Margarita of the Year finalists’ stations to get reacquainted with the final three cocktail finalists, enjoyed some delicious fare and great music, donned a patron apron to create our own Patron cocktail in the Patron Margarita Lab, using a variety of Patron Tequilas, fresh fruits and vegetables from the onsite Produce Market, and a vast array of spices from the Spice Station. after selecting our ingredients, we were directed to a Bar Chef who helped us create our perfect cocktail.

For our cocktail, we chose Patron Silver, Patron Citronage Mango, Ginger, Pear, Blueberries, and Raspberries. Our spices, which would become our rim salt/sugar, included Ginger, Lemon Peel, Basil, Lavender, Cayenne Pepper, etc.

As we mentioned earlier, this event was amazing and interactive. After a night of quite some fun, it was time to announce the winner. John Paul DeJoria, Co-Founder of Patron Tequila (you also know him as the co-founder of Paul Mitchell Hair), introduced the three finalists and announced Jordan Corney and his spicy Rose Picante Margarita was the night’s winner. No surprise there since he has been in the number one spot from the day voting initially started.

What an amazing event and a wonderful way to celebrate mixologists. Are you up to try a spicy margarita? Did your favorite win the Patron Margarita of the Year title? Let us know in the comments below.
