The Oscars Hair: Lupita Nyong’o’s Amasunzu Hairstyle by Vernon François

All queens must wear crowns and that is exactly how we can describe Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning Academy Awards hairstyle. To coordinate with her gold and black Custom Atelier Versace, celebrity hairstylist and textured hair whisperer, Vernon François created an elegant and regal Amasunzu inspired hairstyle. These elaborate hairstyles are traditionally worn by Rwandan men and single women noted for their crescent shapes. An Amasunzu hairstyle designates a wearer’s social status and Lupita’s Oscars red carpet hairstyle clearly displays her regality.

“Lupita’s look was inspired by images of Amasunzu hairstyles, which are traditional to Rwandan culture. We wanted something clean and sculpted to accent her dress and show off the neckline.” – Vernon François

To recreate Lupita’s look, Vernon washed her hair with the Pure~Fro Shampoo and Pure~Fro Conditioner which contains keratin to help the hair retain moisture. Vernon then prepped Lupita’s hair with the Mist~Nourishing Water, and Scalp Nourish~Ment Braids and Locs Spray to soothe and protect strands before blow-drying with a round brush. Next, Vernon smoothed her ends using a flatiron, leaving roots authentic. Using only his hands, Vernon molded her hair to create the clean, contoured structure and setting with hairspray. To complete the look, Vernon weaved a gold thread through her hair using a classic stitch technique for a touch of glamour & shine.

We loved how this hairstyle celebrated the texture of Lupita’s hair, as well as celebrating the traditional yet ostentatious  Rwandan hairstyle. The Vernon François products used on Lupita are available now. Retail costs for the Vernon François hair products are as follows: Mist~Nourishing Water -$18.00, Pure~Fro Shampoo -$26.00, Pure~Fro Conditioner – $28.00, and the Scalp Nourish~Ment Braids and Locs Spray – $24.00. All of the hair products are available on www.Sephora.com, select Sephora retailers, and on www.VernonFrancois.com.

What are your thoughts on Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning Academy Awards hairstyle? Are you ready to rock an Amasunzu inspired hairstyle?

Read on for the tips and tricks to replicate the three Golden Globes beauty looks.

Susan Kelechi Watson’s “bobfro” by Vernon François

Part and section the hair and create two strand twists and then set under a diffuser or hood dryer. Next, split & separate the twists, concentrating on the bottom to reveal carefree body and volume. To complete the look, pin the sides to hold the hair in place & top off with the Dazz~Ling Spritz Shine Spray for a touch of shimmer.

Caitriona Balfe hair by Harry Josh for Joico

Inspiration: “We wanted to keep hair on the modest side, as there’s an important message being portrayed by the women on the carpet tonight. That’s why we decided to go with a tight, slicked-back bun and kept it simple, sleek and chic.” – Harry Josh

TIPS/TECHNIQUE: “Prep is super important to a finished look – the battle of healthy looking hair begins in the shower. To ensure moisturized and healthy hair, Harry Josh started Caitriona’s hair by using the Joico K-Pak Luster Lock as he washed the hair. This deep-penetrating system was left on her hair for minutes before washing out and is a great 3-minute miracle for dehydrated hair, as it gave the high-wattage shine needed for tonight’s red carpet or is even great for day-to-day life.

Harry Josh decided on a very sleek bun for Caitriona’s red-carpet look. First, he started blow drying the hair, making sure to apply the Joico Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Crème to her still wet hair – this helped to diminish frizz or any heat damage, which was important for the sleekness of the look. It was also vital to blow dry the hair downwards using a flat brush, this made sure hair was illuminated and lent to the shininess we were trying to achieve. Once her hair was dried, Harry made sure to apply the smallest drop of the Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum to the ends of Caitriona’s hair to create an ultra-healthy finished look.

To start the styling, Harry created a zig-zag part at the top of her head, then secured all her hair into an extremely tight ponytail in the back using an elastic band. He then started to twist the ponytail around the elastic band until he felt it buckle. Once he felt that buckle, he secured the hair with bobby pins to keep the bun in place. To finish off the look and make sure it appeared extra-glossy, Harry used the Joico Power Spray which not only ensured the hair would stay in place, but also give a high-gloss, almost wet-look finish. Finally, for an extra hint of flair, he decided to use chain-metal panels on the side of the head to create a fun, a-symmetrical look.

PRODUCTS: Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock ($19.99), Joico Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Crème 03 ($14.99), Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum ($17.49), and Joico Power Spray Fast-Dry Finishing Spray ($16.99). Get them all at www.LoxaBeauty.com, Ulta, and www.Ulta.com.

Lily James Makeup by Katey Denno for Biossance

Green beauty expert and celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno worked with Biossance to give British beauty Lily James a golden glow for tonight’s awards. Before creating her effortless makeup look, Katey prepped Lily’s skin by pressing in 5-6 drops of Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil to brighten and even out her skin tone. On the areas where Lily needed an extra boost of hydration, Katey massaged a few drops of Biossance Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer. For an all-over glow, Katey added a few additional drops of the Gel Moisturizer to her decolletage, back and arms.

All of Biossance’s products are made with the brand’s 100% plant-based and sustainable Squalene Oil, a weightless oil that hydrates and locks in essential moisture.

Amber Heard’s Loose Waves at the Magic Mike XXL Premiere

The lovely Amber Heard looked absolutely gorgeous at the premiere of her new film, Magic Mike XXL. To create her loose waves, Celebrity Hairstylist, Peter Butler, used Leonor Greyl hair products. To achieve the sensual look, a stylish fusion of Jerry Hall and Veronica Lake, Butler started with damp hair and applied Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur on her ends. He then applied Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice from root to ends, and blew her hair dry. He finished off by misting the hair with Leonor Greyl Laque Souple Hair Spray, to lock in the look, yet keep touchably soft and movable.

I really love this line, especially the delicate aromas. These products leave my hair (and skin) feeling brilliant, beautiful and glamorous. The Leonor Greyl brand specializes in hair care products that are made from only the highest grade of environment-friendly natural ingredients. My favorites are Huile Secret de Beauté Organic Beauty Oil and Serum de Soie Sublimateur Styling Serum for the overall protection they provide for your hair.

Huile-Secret-Beaute-Leonor-Greyl

Huile Secret de Beauté is an organic beauty oil perfect for the hair and skin. This organic beauty oil for hair and skin delights with its scent of lemongrass, a staple for hair and body care. It also includes UVA/B sun protection, can be used all year long, and absorbs quickly, leaving hair silky with a gorgeous shine, and skin feeling soft and touchable. This rare jewel can be purchased for only $66.00.

Serum-de-Soie-sublimateur-leonor-greyl

The Serum de Soie Sublimateur works well with all hair types. It is made of a lovely combination of silk proteins and other oils. This product works as a wonderful detangler. It smooths, conditions and nourishes the hair without weighing it down. This nourishing and protective styling serum is also great for protecting hair from heat styling and sun exposure. Another hair must-have for only $46.00.

2013 Golden Globes Red Carpet Hair | The Updo’s

My other favorite Golden Globe red carpet hairstyles were the updos and semi-updos featuring Julianne Moore’s classic and very chic 60’s chignon, Adele’s bouffant and Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lawrence’s messy low buns (a style I wished Claire Danes Opted for….along with cleaner eye makeup but back to the topic at hand) – the updos:

Julianne Moore’s style seemed to be everyone’s favorite and she has Jennifer Aniston’s and Living Proof’s Celebrity Hairstylist, Chris McMillan to thank for that. Chris talks about his inspiration for Julianne’s hair using Living Proof Prime Style Extender ($20.00), No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray ($26.00) and Firm Hold Hairspray ($24.00) to create the look:

“It all started with the dress, Julianne showed me what she was wearing yesterday and I had 24 hours to figure out how to style her hair. Overall it was a ‘60s look – I have been watching a lot of Hitchcock lately. I took inspiration from the graphic clothing styles that are a trend this season paired with the hair I saw on the runways of Luis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs.”

“First, I applied Living Proof Prime Style Extender, it gave me the sleek, smooth, healthy hair I needed for styling. I then applied No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray to the crown to keep the hair looking smooth. I dried the hair straight with a large round brush. I created a deep side swept bang, and then pulled the hair back into a classic French twist with an uneven seam. Everything else about the look was so perfect and sleek that I wanted the seam to be a little deconstructed. Finally, I secured the look and added Firm Hold hairspray to keep the hair in place.”

2013 Golden Globes Red Carpet Hair | The Classic 40’s Old Hollywood Glam

I usually try to just live tweet the red caret beauty and fashion for award shows because everyone else is writing a “my (insert award show here) beauty/fashion/etc” features but I find that I cannot escape because for the first time, I prefered the red carpet beauty to th red carpet fashion….though I must say I loved Naomi Watts’s deep red gown. My favorite aspect, all the vintage glam-inspired hair…those soft, sultry curls that celebs like Nicole Richie, Connie Britton, Rachel Weisz, etc rocked.

Out of these ladies, my favorites were Rachel Weisz and Connie Britton. Celebrity hairstylist Rod Ortega created Connie Britton’s classic 1940’s old Hollywood look by prepping with Leonor Greyl’s Serum de Soie Sublimateur on the ends and Leonor Greyl’s Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice on the roots. Try his below instructions to achieve this look:

Rod then began blow drying the hair with a round boar brush, smoothing out the hair and finished drying it. Before using a heat styling tool, he recommends using Leonor Greyl’s Spray Structure Naturelle. “This setting spray is very important because it’s going to give the hold for the style.” Using a 1-inch curling iron and setting the hair with the setting spray, he let Connie’s hair cool and brushed the waves out with a large paddle brush into beautiful, shiny waves. He then secured the waves with Leonor Greyl’s Lacque Souple, a couple of pumps of the Leonor Greyl Spray Structure Naturelle… “and voila, you have a finished red carpet look!”

Leonor Greyl is available at www.leonorgreyl-usa.com.

Get The Hottest Oscar Hairstyles At Home!

We finally made it the most glamorous awards show of the year: the Oscars! Just as we expected, we saw some gorgeous gowns and amazing hairstyles. While we can’t help you score a vintage Dior dress, we have great tips to get your hair looking red-carpet ready. Wella Professionals was responsible for some of the best looks of the night, and now their celebrity stylists are sharing their tips on how they created these hot Hollywood hairstyles.

Michelle Williams

Michelle’s pixie is very modern and sophisticated chic. The hair has just enough texture to make the look sweet, yet edgy.

To Get The Look: First, start by applying Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte to wet hair, then allow it to air dry. With a small round brush, finish off with a blow dry that gives the hair more height, then use your hands to set the part and bangs. Finish the look with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to set in place.

Penelope Cruz

The actress showed off very old Hollywood glamour, channeling the 1950s Grace Kelly finger waves that perfectly complemented her Armani Privé gown.

To Get The Look: Start with dry hair and use a small amount of Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse at the roots. Set hair in steam hot rollers by rolling hair straight back from the head. This will give hair extra texture and curl. Use smaller rollers at the back of the head to create a tighter curl, and then pin hair underneath into a faux bob. Lightly mist with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray, then back comb and tease at the root. Brush out the finger waves into place and set with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Leslie Mann

Stylist Rod Ortega decided to give Leslie a ponytail for a more youthful look that made for a fun contrast to her elegant, sequin-detailed dress. The high ponytail also works well for her face shape, creating a beautiful silhouette.

To Get The Look: Start out by prepping wet hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to prime hair for a smooth blowout. Use a small amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum on the ends of the hair for added smoothness and shine. Blow out with a round brush at the roots for texture and use a Mason Pearson paddle brush to blow dry from mid-length to the ends. Back comb for extra volume, especially at the roots, and use a flat brush from mid-length to ends again so there is texture, but not curl. Then leave the front and sides of the hair out, pull the rest of the hair into a ponytail near the top of the back of the head. Smooth the hair left out of the ponytail back and wrap around the elastic to hide the band. Spray the style with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold in place while leaving it with lots of natural movement.

Olivia Wilde

Stylist Davy Newkirk and Olivia opted to go for a chic 70’s inspired updo to complement her strapless Gucci gown that she wore to the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The roughed up, simplistic yet super chic updo gave her a timeless and effortlessly beautiful look.

To Get The Look: First, apply Wella Professionals Pearl Styler to wet hair and rough dry it, using your hand and a blow dryer. This will give hair extra texture before styling. Next, gather hair at the crown of the head and secure with a bungee cord. You can tease the ends to rough it up a bit more, for added edgy texture. Loosely twisted the hair around the bungee for a loose structure and secure with bobby pins and hair pins. To finish, spray the hair with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix Hairspray, and rough up the hair with fingers at the root and around the bun, spraying once again with the Dynamic Fix to add sheen and hold the look for the night.

Nina DoBrev

Celebrity stylist Riawna Capri gave Nina a youthful looking fishtail ponytail that is easier to create at home than you think.

To Get The Look: First, spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz all over and scrunch hair for a nice beachy texture. Loosely gather the hair into a slightly messy ponytail with a center part. Then, begin your fishtail braid. Once done, pull a couple pieces out to create a more distressed look and finish with a shine spray, such as Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight all over for a polished finish.

2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

Michelle Williams’ wears color that complements her skin tone.

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

Graceful Sheen
“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

Jason Merrit/Getty Images

Aura recommends her A-list clientele use Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, which is designed to seal in color while leaving locks irresistibly smooth to the touch.

“Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier is a red-carpet favorite,” adds Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, “that smoothes the hair surface so it can better prepare the hair for styling.” Andy also uses Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray on his clientele to create the most sheen and expensive looking finish to any end look.

Angelic Side-Chignons
LeCompte predicts that celebs will lean toward classic styles with a play on texture and symmetry. “There will be a lot of deep side parts and loose ponys, bobs and chignons tied to the side.” This style can be customized to accentuate any gown, face shape or hair accessory. “It also lessens the stuffiness of that prom feeling and adds a more up-to-date, laissez-faire feeling.

The options here are endless, but no matter the look, you can use Wella Professionals products to perfect the end look. Apply 3-5 pumps of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier hair primer to create an even surface on each and every hair follicle before drying the hair, creating a foundation for the most luxurious looking end-look. To keep a style looking fresh yet modernly undone, use a light-hold hairspray such as Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold the hair while keeping an overall sense of liquid movement.

The red carpet arrivals of the 84th Annual Academy Awards®, will be airing January 26th on NBC. Be sure to join Wella Professionals on Twitter and Facebook LIVE during the red carpet arrivals (between 4pm and 7pm EST), along with their special guest panel of hair pros Aura Friedman, Rick Wellman and Mark Garrison to get tips, tricks and commentary on the hair looks of the evening.

The Golden Globes are nearing, and while some are excited to see which movies and miniseries win, we’re excited to see the celebs, dresses and ‘dos! We talked to Wella Professionals Celebrity Hairstylist Andy LeCompte and Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman about their predictions on what hairstyles will make their way down the red carpet on Sunday night. They’ve had the pleasure of working with Golden Globe stars, including Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, Fergie, and Megan Fox.

Charlize Theron is likely to sport a look that is understated and chic

Effortless Elegance With A Glossy Finish
“I think we’ll see a peak in fluid textures that suggest effortless elegance, like very healthy and sleek hair that shows a lot of movement. This style will be popular with soft and light tones with a warm glow that emphasizes healthy, shiny hair representative of the Wella Trend Vision look aptly named, Grace,” says LeCompte. Another great example: Charlize Theron’s shiny, sleek blowout with gentle waves.

To get the look, first, apply a good amount of hair primer, like Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier, to wet hair. This will create an even surface on each hair follicle, improving the evenness of your overall end look. Then, while your hair is still wet, apply a smoothing balm, such as Wella Professionals Flowing Form, to dramatically enhance the manageability and smoothness of your blowout. One you’ve finished blow drying your hair, finish with a spritz of shine spray. Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight helps keep hair healthy and shimmering, despite the heat of a blowout.

Statement-Making Tones And Daring Definition

Courtesy of Wella Professionals

To the contrary, we can also expect to see daring, modern styles made possible by the evolution of high tech hair tools and high pigment color. Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman says, “We can look forward to the soft introduction of this very bold hair color trend at the Golden Globes this year. Inspired by the Trend Vision look, “Roxy,” this is an attention grabbing style where color plays an integral role. We will especially see a shift to cool red tones and bursts of violet, statement-making colors with an edge of sophistication.”

“A perfect color,” says Aura, “should complement the person who’s wearing it…but also suit their personality and lifestyle. It should enhance, but not overpower.” To keep vibrant hues looking their best, Aura suggests to avoid shampooing too much and use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, like Wella’s Brilliance Line. If your hair is very dull, she also recommends getting a clear gloss to add instant vibrancy and seal the cuticle of your hair for added shine. As for the style, this look does not shy away from shape or definition. Tight curls and gravity-defying shapes can be expected. With such “atypical” styles being created with styling tools, it’s very important to prepare your hair with a heat protectant spray before styling, such as Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protectant Spray. You’ll need to finish the look with a strong-hold hairspray, such as Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray.
