It is said that the ocean contains over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic; who knows what that number grows to when you calculate the plastic we have on land. While it’s great to have companies like 4ocean and The Ocean Cleanup that are actively cleaning our oceans and coastlines, our best solution would be to eliminate the use of plastic. If you counted the empty bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc you throw away. What would your number be? What if you could eliminate your use of those plastic bottles and still enjoy fantastic hair care and beauty products!! With the beauty products from Unwrapped Life zero-waste hair care, you can.

Glow Green: 5 Tips To Go Green With Your Beauty Routine

While you might not think about it all that often, your daily beauty routine can have a surprisingly large impact on the environment. Between plastic packaging, artificial ingredients, and wasteful practices, your normal beauty routine might be harming the environment more than you realize. Here are a few tips and tricks you can use to shrink your carbon footprint while still looking and feeling great. Ready to go green with your beauty routine?

Green Beauty Products

Be Mindful Of Packaging

Most commercially produced and sold beauty products come in plastic packaging since this allows companies to cut down on costs of production. However, all that plastic has to go somewhere, and while most of it can be recycled, less than 22% of household trash is recycled in the U.S. When shopping for your makeup, skin care products, and more, look for products with reusable packaging. With a bit of effort, it’s even possible to go zero-waste with your routine.

Look At Ingredients Lists

Do you actually know what’s in that moisturizer you’re using? Many beauty products will use artificial ingredients, and some products might contain components that can irritate sensitive skin. Whenever possible, look for organic beauty products to integrate into your routine. The USDA has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled, and processed.

Go Cruelty-Free

Almost all companies will test their beauty products before releasing them, however, some choose to test on animals rather than humans. Animal testing is often cruel and inhumane, despite being a common industry practice. To reduce your contributions to animal testing, look for products that are labeled as cruelty-free. This means they avoid animal testing so you can feel good about your purchases.

Pay Attention To Sources

Your products might have organic ingredients and not test on animals, but how far did it have to travel to get to you? Many ingredients are sourced from longer distances before being processed, and then your products need to be shipped to a store before you buy them. All that shipping can add up to a larger carbon footprint than you might expect for a single beauty product. When possible, shop local, and always pay attention to where your makeup’s ingredients are being sourced from.

Do It Yourself

Want to go green with your beauty routine, but worried about how much it might cost you? Try making your own products instead. It’s estimated that by 2024, the global skin care market will reach $180 billion. Instead of spending your hard-earned money on beauty products with harmful environmental consequences, try making your own at home. That way you’ll be able to control exactly what goes into the products you’re using and how much waste is produced in the process.

Most people don’t consider the environmental impact of their regular beauty routine, but your trusted products might have a larger carbon footprint than you expect. Use these tips to keep your routine eco-friendly so you can feel great about the steps you take to look great.

Today Glitter 100% plastic-free glitter

Biodegradable Glitter, the Newest Product to Save the Planet

Festival season is officially here and it’s time to start gearing up with the freshest looks for the affair. But these events aren’t well-known for their eco-friendly initiatives; in fact, the amount of trash associated with these events have made them hard for environmentalists to swallow. Especially now that plastic straws have been banned in many locations.

Today Glitter 100% plastic-free glitter

Unfortunately, this plastic infiltration is nothing new. At the recent Coachella festival, more than a dozen grape farmers picked up shifts each night collecting pounds upon pounds of plastic cups, wrappers, and trash.

But the California coastline is used to garbage crowding its shores. Among the 3,400 miles of California coastline, most of it has been cluttered with straws, plastics, and waste for years. Amidst the new laws seeking to banish plastic bags and other single-use plastic products, the makeup industry has been among the most difficult markets to sway.

Enter: biodegradable glitter.

Today Glitter 100% plastic-free glitter

While many companies have been touting eco-friendly glitter products this year, Today Glitter is the first 100% biodegradable glitter product for festival-goers, DIY crafters, and savvy spenders, alike. This glitter has been integrated into makeup brands, body lotions, and more, with FDA approval to be used on eyes and lips. This makes it one of the best products to use during festival season.

“At Today Glitter, our mission is to enhance the inner beauty of each individual without contaminating our environment,” notes Victor Alvarez, the spokesperson for Today Glitter. “With 100% plastic-free biodegradable glitter, beauty gurus, families, and everyone in between can experience the joys of glitter without risking harm to the planet. It’s our passion to give fans useful and creative alternatives to live a sparkly life without the waste.”

Today Glitter 100% plastic-free glitter

Best of all? This glitter degrades in fewer than 30 days. While it means you can’t stock up on your favorite products, it ensures that traditional glitter made from small pieces of plastic stay out of the environment.

These microplastics are terrible for the environment. Anything from plankton to fish to birds regularly ingests these plastics which contributes to bioaccumulation throughout the ecosystem. They can take up to 200 years to photodegrade in the environment where they break into smaller plastic particles before they’re finally gone. Scientists have been calling on a ban for glitter for years. It was thanks to their efforts that microbead exfoliants were banned back in 2015.

These biodegradable glitters are also much more comfortable to wear with some reports claiming that they’re up to 40% silkier than traditional glitter. Starting at $10, this affordable option will hopefully push plastics out of the beauty realm for good. This festival season, invest in eco-friendly products.

Naturcolor Herbal Based Haircolor: The Eco-Friendly Haircolor Gel

Do you want to know the best things about the Natural Products Expo West? Being introduced to natural and organic products from across every industry. This year’s event happened at the beginning of this month and as always, was a treasure trove of eco-friendly, organic, and herbal-based products. One of the standout product we were introduced to was Naturcolor Herbal based haircolor.

This herbal-based, permanent, eco-friendly haircolor gel uses high-quality natural ingredients to cover grey hairs, add radiant highlights, or dramatically change your existing hair color. Available in 31 colors, each Naturcolor Herbal based haircolor can be used alone or blended to create personalized colors. The herbal-based haircolors are handcrafted with the finest Italian pigments derived from botanicals. It can be used repeatedly without damaging your hair, unlike harsh chemical colors. The 31 colors feature five different color series; they include the Natural Series, Copper Series, Golden Series, Mahogany Series, and Ash Series.

The Naturcolor Herbal based haircolor Natural Series was specially formulated with the strongest pigments to “cover” gray. The other color groups are made with lighter pigments. These color with a more transparent effect and are designed to be mixed with the Natural Series for special custom tints or highlights. The Naturcolor Herbal based haircolor range contains no ammonia, resorcinol,  or parabens, and is cruelty-free.

After coloring, we recommend using the Naturcolor After Color Treatment. This very mild shampoo is designed specifically for use after hair coloring. It gently removes any excess hair dye without stripping away the hair color that you just applied.

Other Naturcolor hair products include the Rejuvennis Shampoo, Echinacea Herbacreme Conditioner, and Phytovitamin Tonic. In the age of being more aware of what goes into the product that we use, are you ready to give up the chemicals and go for natural ingredients hair color?

Drink to Sustainability | Danny Seo’s Philosophy Wines

It’s a sad fact that many people think going green or organic means you have to give up your favorite foods and drinks, but they would be very wrong. While it is true you may have to give up your preferred brands, there are hundreds of companies that offer phenomenal organic options in every category (you most likely will end up liking the organic choices more). For example, we love wine and like to enjoy a glass or two often, and we couldn’t see ourselves giving it up just because we’re going organic. We recently discovered a lovely collection of organic wines called Philosophy Wines, by the recently dubbed “green Martha Stewart” (NY Post), Danny Seo. The first two wines in Danny’s Philosophy Collection include a 2011 Zinfandel and 2012 Sauvignon Blanc.

Proving that you don’t have to give up on taste and quality even though you are drinking sustainably, Philosophy Wines offers exceptional wines from organic grapes grown in prized, organic vineyards in the cool climate of Mendocino, CA.

  • “The 2011 Philosophy Zinfandel is complex and full with plenty of fruit-forward notes. Raspberries, plums, and blackberries burst onto the palate with notes of cedar, vanilla, and bramble in support. This wine has nice structure and the heavy texture of the wine helps it to finish smooth and long.
  • The 2012 Philosophy Sauvignon Blanc explodes with bright citrus flavors, tropical fruits, lemongrass, and pears. The acidity of the grapes is well maintained in the wine which is refreshing, clean, and vibrant. The wine is distinct and complex while delivering easy drinkability.”**

Both Philosophy wines are right at home indoors and outdoors, with the Zinfandel pairing perfectly with anything off the grill, especially steak, pork chops, etc, and the Sauvignon Blanc great with savory dishes like lemon chicken, and fish in citrus, along with various cheeses, especially goat cheeses.

We found that we couldn’t get enough of the fresh, crisp taste of the Sauvignon Blanc. We certainly didn’t have any trouble devouring several chilled  glasses and even experimented a bit by adding with chunks of fresh mango to a glass on one occasion and slices of fresh ginger to another. It was no surprise to find out the resulting flavors were amazing. The Zinfandel played up the flavors (we are die-hard fans of bold seasonings) of our hickory BBQ Chicken, Turkey Chili, and Szechuan Beef dishes we paired it with. Both wines are available nationally for a retail price of $19.99 and can be purchased on PhilosophyWine.com.
