Koskenkorva Vodka: The World’s Most Sustainable Vodka

Koskenkorva Vodka: The World’s Most Sustainable Vodka

As Earth Month comes to an end, we hope you will continue to support the brands that are helping to make our planet and better one. We had the pleasure of getting better acquainted with Koskenkorva Vodka during a virtual Masterclass moderated by BravoTV.com’s Beverage & Event Expert, Paul Zahn, with Koskenkorva Vodka Global Brand Ambassador Mikael Karttunen. The very smooth vodka made from very special barley grown by a dedicated group of local farmers and pure water. It’s also the vodka made in one of the world’s most sustainable distilleries in Finland. This makes Koskenkorva Vodka, the world’s most sustainable vodka.

Koskenkorva Vodka: The World’s Most Sustainable Vodka

The award-winning vodka uses custom barley varieties that have been developed for the short growing season of Finland. Most of Koskenkorva’s barley is sourced locally within 200km of the Koskenkorva village, where sustainability is a way of life and goes through a state-of-the-art distillation process. It’s made with pure 100% unfiltered and unprocessed pure spring water (we know Finland is known for its exceptional spring water). The vodka brand owns its bioenergy plant at Koskenkorva village; it is specially designed to use the barley husks that are leftover from the distillation, as fuel for steam generation. The ashes are used in the nearby barley fields as a fertilizer. Hence why their mantra is “Vodka from a village”.

During the master class, we learned how to create a delicious cocktail, whose recipe we’ve shared with you below. See our not-so-smooth attempt at creating this cocktail. As previously stated, the virtual event was moderated by Koskenkorva Vodka Global Brand Ambassador Mikael Karttunen. Mikael’s worn many hats. He’s been the Editor-in-chief of The Shaker Magazine, Finland’s oldest and biggest bartending magazine in Finland; a bartender for 23 yrs, awarded twice at the Finnish National Bartending Championships; co-authored the book Kotimainen Cocktail, and so much more.

The Sparkling Green Lemonade

Koskenkorva Vodka: The World’s Most Sustainable Vodka

1.5 oz Koskenkorva Vodka
2 oz Organic unsweetened green tea
3 oz Sparkling lemonade
.5 oz Lemon juice (optional)
5-6 Mint leaves (optional)
Build vodka, tea, lemon juice, and mint in an iced mixing tin. Shake vigorously over ice and pour into glass. Top
with 3 oz. of sparkling lemonade & stir. Garnish with a lemon wheel and/or mint sprig.

Despite our few missteps, our cocktail was amazingly delicious and we highly recommend you grab yourself a bottle try this recipe yourself. The Koskenkorva Vodka virtual event also gave us some sustainable tips on what to do with our Koskenkorva bottle after it’s empty from Jeanie Engelbach, owner of Apartment Jeannie. Our favorite tips were transforming the bottles into glass tumblers and painting them to use as vases. What other tips do you recommend for empty spirit bottles.? Let us know in the comments.

Boxed Water Launches Four New Flavors

Boxed Water: Say Goodbye to Single Use Plastic Water Bottles

Despite the strides made in ocean cleanup and other cleanup projects, there’s still so much that has to be done to clean up the environment. Unfortunately, we cannot do it on our own, we (individuals and brands) must continuously work together to reverse or at least stop the damages we’ve done to the planet. Since Earth Day is coming up, we want to recognize one brand doing amazing things, including working with consumers to help the planet. With 69 billion plastic water bottles produced in the US each year, now is a good time to take a closer look at just how much we Americans u.se single-use plastic. If you think about the products we use daily, almost everything comes in a plastic container. It’s safe to say we’re addicted. Boxed Water is here to change that with its sustainable packaging and practices, and you can help.

Sustainable Brands: Say Goodbye to Single Use Plastic Water Bottles

We recently had the opportunity to virtually chat with Boxed Water CMO Rob Koenen, where we learned some disturbing facts. Did you know the largest contributor to plastic waste (31%) is beverage bottles? The second (15%) is bottle caps. A New Science Advances Study shows the US generates the largest amount of plastic waste of any country in the world. We were also shocked to learn the amount of plastic the US contributes to the ocean is actually FIVE TIMES greater than originally estimated. Imagine how much cleaner (and safer to animals) the ocean would be if we eliminated this toxic contribution.

Boxed Water: Say Goodbye to Single Use Plastic Water Bottles

Many of you may not know this but Boxed Water Is Better is the leading sustainable alternative to plastic bottles and aluminum cans. they have changed the way packaged water is shipped, sold, and enjoyed, becoming the most sustainable brand in the water aisle. All of Boxed Water’s cartons are 100% recyclable, refillable, and BPA-free. They source the carton paper from trees in well-managed forests, where new trees are continuously planted to replace the ones harvested. Going further, now both the caps and their cartons are plant-based, making the overall company a 92 percent plant-based one.

Sustainable Brand Boxed Water: Say Goodbye to Single Use Plastic Water Bottles

Boxed Water is also a member of 1% For The Planet and partner of the National Forest Foundation and Ocean Blue Project. Together, they have planted over 1,000,000 trees in our National Forests and cleaned thousands of miles of beaches. You can help plant more trees by posting a photo or video of a carton of Boxed Water or favorite houseplant, what you would name your houseplant, and what that name means to you. Tag @boxedwater and hashtag #betterplanet on either post and they will plant two trees.  As if there weren’t enough reasons to love the sustainable Boxed Water, they recently launched a range of flavored waters that are refreshingly delicious.

Boxed Water Launches Four New Flavors

Purified through an eight-step purification process and UV treated, each Boxed Water flavor boasts the crisp, fresh taste you love from the original, with a twist. The four naturally and subtly flavored water options include:

  • Blackberry – a natural brightness for a change of pace
  • Lemon – a classic flavor with a light hint of lemon
  • Cucumber – a spa-influenced refreshing taste
  • Grapefruit – an energizing way to kick start the day

The Lemon and Grapefruit flavors are great to brighten your morning. Grab a Cucumber when you’re treating yourself to a spa day, and the Blackberry is great for when you’re looking for a better alternative to sugary drinks.

Like the original, the Boxed Water flavors have no minerals added and it’s 100% pure. Unlike the classic black and white original packaging, the flavors come in a plant-based carton that features bold pops of color. Replacing your single-use plastic water bottle with Boxed Water Flavored Water, lowers your carbon footprint by 64% and protects our planet from the overuse of single-use plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Bouclème Root Refresh: The Alternative to Dry Shampoo for Curly Hair

We’ve been on automatically for the past few weeks, not realizing we having been paying much attention to our hair. With the neverending hours of zoom meetings and a heavy workload, our hair has been in a top knot for a while. Some might say long enough to rival ballerinas. Thankfully a hair savior was recently brought into our lives in the form of Bouclème Root Refresh. This double-duty hair product harnesses the power of plants to care for curly hair.

Bouclème Root Refresh: The Alternative to Dry Shampoo for Curly Hair

The Bouclème Root Refresh is a refreshing mist that soothes, deodorizes, and revives scalp and roots to encourage strong and healthy curls. If you aren’t aware (and we really hope you are), we’re battling to save the planet from our garbage. It is said that the ocean contains over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic; who knows what that number grows to when you calculate the plastic we have on land. While it’s great to have companies like 4ocean and The Ocean Cleanup that are actively cleaning our oceans and coastlines, our best solution would be to eliminate the use of plastic. If you counted the empty bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc you throw away. What would your number be? What if you could eliminate your use of those plastic bottles and still enjoy fantastic hair care and beauty products!! With the beauty products from Unwrapped Life zero-waste hair care, you can.

emerginC: Helping Your Skin and Healing the Planet

We live in a time where the products we use greatly affects our lives; not just our bodies, but our environment as well. We no longer just have to worry about what we put into our bodies, attention must be paid to what we put on our skin and how we treat our environment. One skincare brand making sure that both our bodies and our surroundings are well protected is emerginC, an ethical and sustainable organic skincare company that incorporates clinically proven cosmeceutical, medical-grade, and fair trade ingredients, active botanicals, and marine extracts into their products. For over 20 years, emerginC has been using only high-quality, cutting-edge ingredients formulated with natural plant-based preservatives.

We had the opportunity to meet Ian Lirenman, CEO, and founder of emerginC, as he introduced the brand’s latest launch, the Scientific Organics Body Firming Serum, an advanced, lightweight body firming serum formulated with Actigym™, Nocturshape™, arnica extract and fair trade aloe, features a unique glass roller ball tube application system to help reduce the appearance of cellulite while toning and firming the skin. We also got to know more about their cult-favorites, the Vitamin C Serum (the most stable and effective vitamin C serums to emerge on the market, and the very first product they created), Scientific Organics Kombucha Cleanser (which we’re currently using and loving), and Scientific Organics Facial Cleansing Wipes.

But creating exceptional skincare products is not all that emerginC does. They are also giving back with the industry-first “buy one, plant one” tree planting program in collaboration with Plant-It 2020. For every emerginC product sold, one indigenous tree is planted in a non-harvest location. As of today, emerginC and Plant-It 2020 have planted over 600,000 trees in such areas as Madagascar, Nepal, Poland, etc. The organic skincare company, known for their history of environmental consciousness, have also started an emerginBees bee habitat initiative as well as an emerginCeeds organic vegetable program.

The brand is headquartered in a wind-powered building near the waterfront in Brooklyn, the company offers its staff accesses to weekly yoga classes, a rooftop garden with vegetables and flowers, and chickens that produce organic eggs all year round. See Founder and CEO, Ian Lirenman, planting Pok Choi on the emerginC rooftop garden below:

We love companies that are doing great things, especially when we, the consumers can be a part of that initiative. So whether you purchase their famed Vitamin C Serum, Facial Cleaning Wipes, or their new Body Firming Serum, you’re helping to save our planet, one tree at a time. Have you tried any emerginC skincare products? Share your thoughts with us.

Drink to Sustainability | Danny Seo’s Philosophy Wines

It’s a sad fact that many people think going green or organic means you have to give up your favorite foods and drinks, but they would be very wrong. While it is true you may have to give up your preferred brands, there are hundreds of companies that offer phenomenal organic options in every category (you most likely will end up liking the organic choices more). For example, we love wine and like to enjoy a glass or two often, and we couldn’t see ourselves giving it up just because we’re going organic. We recently discovered a lovely collection of organic wines called Philosophy Wines, by the recently dubbed “green Martha Stewart” (NY Post), Danny Seo. The first two wines in Danny’s Philosophy Collection include a 2011 Zinfandel and 2012 Sauvignon Blanc.

Proving that you don’t have to give up on taste and quality even though you are drinking sustainably, Philosophy Wines offers exceptional wines from organic grapes grown in prized, organic vineyards in the cool climate of Mendocino, CA.

  • “The 2011 Philosophy Zinfandel is complex and full with plenty of fruit-forward notes. Raspberries, plums, and blackberries burst onto the palate with notes of cedar, vanilla, and bramble in support. This wine has nice structure and the heavy texture of the wine helps it to finish smooth and long.
  • The 2012 Philosophy Sauvignon Blanc explodes with bright citrus flavors, tropical fruits, lemongrass, and pears. The acidity of the grapes is well maintained in the wine which is refreshing, clean, and vibrant. The wine is distinct and complex while delivering easy drinkability.”**

Both Philosophy wines are right at home indoors and outdoors, with the Zinfandel pairing perfectly with anything off the grill, especially steak, pork chops, etc, and the Sauvignon Blanc great with savory dishes like lemon chicken, and fish in citrus, along with various cheeses, especially goat cheeses.

We found that we couldn’t get enough of the fresh, crisp taste of the Sauvignon Blanc. We certainly didn’t have any trouble devouring several chilled  glasses and even experimented a bit by adding with chunks of fresh mango to a glass on one occasion and slices of fresh ginger to another. It was no surprise to find out the resulting flavors were amazing. The Zinfandel played up the flavors (we are die-hard fans of bold seasonings) of our hickory BBQ Chicken, Turkey Chili, and Szechuan Beef dishes we paired it with. Both wines are available nationally for a retail price of $19.99 and can be purchased on PhilosophyWine.com.
