Urban Skin Rx: Skincare From The Melanin Skin Experts

Everyone has heard the famous line “Black don’t crack”; while it’s true that the melanin in African American skin helps in looking younger, black skin still needs nurturing. Black may not crack but it does bruise. While we may look younger, black men and women can still be plagued with skin issues. These include acne, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation and other common concerns seen in darker skin tones. Thankfully, there is a solution. Urban Skin Rx is a clinical skincare line founded by medical aesthetician Rachel Roff. It is a skincare range of scientifically researched corrective skincare products for all skin tones and colors.

Urban Skin Rx Skin Care Products

We are currently trying out three skincare products from Urban Skin Rx – Combination Skin Cleansing Bar, Clear & Even Tone Clarifying Glycolic Pads, and the Even Tone Super Glow Serum. Keep on reading for more information on these products and our take on them:

Urban Skin Rx Skin Care Products

Combination Skin Cleansing Bar, $24.00 – the Urban Skin Rx Cleansing Bars are also known as “treatment bars in a jar” because that’s exactly what they are. The 3-in-1 Combination Skin Cleansing Bar is a smoothing, hydrating cleansing treatment. It improves the appearance of rough skin, aging skin and eczema-prone skin. It works as a daily cleanser, mask, and exfoliator thanks to its rich, thick lather and exfoliating sponge.

Urban Skin Rx Skin Care Products

You don’t need much of the solid brown cleansing bar to get a deep clean, and it boasts a light fennel scent. It left our skin looking brighter and left it felt clean, but not tight or dry. We love a multitasking beauty product and this Urban Skin Rx cleanser is an effective time-saver.

Urban Skin Rx Skin Care Products

Clear & Even Tone Clarifying Glycolic Pads, $32.00- thanks to a powerful combination of Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, and Salicylic acid, the Urban Skin Rx Clear & Even Tone Clarifying Glycolic Pads effectively exfoliates dead skin cells, promotes even-looking skin tone, removes excess oil, and leaves behind a skin cleansing formula. It will take time to see the full benefits of using the pads but personal experience tells us that Glycolic acid smooths the appearance of skin. You’ll experience a slight initial tingling, which disappears just as quickly.

Urban Skin Rx Skin Care Products

Even Tone Super Glow Serum, $26.00 – last but not least is the Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Super Glow Serum; a brightening and anti-aging antioxidant powerhouse. It is the perfect blend of ingredients which work together to improve the appearance of dark spots, sun damage and the effects of aging. It has an earthy scent to it, a faint citrus scent, but more eathy, a lot like aged orange rinds. Upon first application, it can feel a bit sticky but it absorbs fairly quickly into the skin. As sufferers of uneven skin tones, we can’t wait to be free from the issues that plague our darker skin.

Our fellow melanin-gifted, if you are looking for effective skincare for your skin tone needs, try Urban Skin Rx.

NaturallyCurly Kicks Off NYFW with Texture On The Runway

It’s a known fact that black women are trendsetters. From our fashions to our attitudes, to our hair, our style is coveted. It was an amazing pleasure to see that unabashed style and celebration in abundance at the NaturallyCurly Texture On The Runway event, sponsored by Sally Beauty. In its third year of celebrating textured hair and hairstyles, the NYFW kick-off event invited more than 700 influencers, media, and VIPs to experience an innovative runway show and to connect with leading textured hair care brands like Aphogee, Jamaican Mango and Lime, and the hair care brands participating in the runway segment. For this event, fashion took a back seat to hair. It was all about the textured hair.

NaturallyCurly.com co-founder Michelle Breyer hosted the event alongside professional hair stylist Monica Stevens of MoKnowsHair, and Sally Beauty Director of Merchandising Karonda Cook. It was an evening filled with not just textures on the runway, but culture and pride on the runway as well. From luscious ‘fros and cascading waves to wild ringlets and tribal braids – Cantu, Carol’s Daughter, Creme of Nature, Curlformers™, Mielle Organics and SheaMoisture headlined the runway show, featuring their unique vision for textured hair. Highlights of the night included each brand’s original interpretations demonstrating their expertise in texture and highlighting the beauty and versatility of texture.

While Cantu brought an amazing series of step and tap dancers rocking the coolest of hairdos, Creme of Nature wowed with elegant brown ballerinas. Carol’s Daughter had 90’s Brooklyn style and hair in full effect and showed that when it comes to hair, you either go big or go home.

Curlformers was highlighted with the absolutely adorable Instagram stars, Anais and Mirabelle Lee; while Mielle trotted out a bevy of golden goddesses who “slayed” the runway from beginning to end.

Last but certainly not least was SheaMoisture brought the house down with textured hairstyle fit for a queen (keep an eye out for their crowning glory “Egyptian crown” hairstyle).

We had a wonderful time and look forward to attending again next year. What did you think of these textured hairstyles? Any favorite styles from the Texture On The Runway show?

Celebrating 45 Years of Dark and Lovely Hair Care for Women of Color

We recently helped celebrate a great milestone in African American beauty. This year, Dark and Lovely hair care celebrates 45 years of catering to the haircare and styling needs of women of color. The event highlighted Dark and Lovely’s rich heritage and impact the brand has made in the beauty and fashion in the African-American community from it’s creation in the 1970’s, to today.

To commemorate this milestone in haircare, brand ambassador, actress, and singer Demetria McKinney, welcomed the crowd with her latest single, as well as singing the brand’s praises.

“To have 45 years of excellence, to have 45 years of beauty, to have 45 years of empowerment – that’s what Dark and Lovely is. “To be a brand ambassador for this brand has been an awesome, awesome journey!”

Although she couldn’t make the event, actress Teyonah Parris, the newest brand ambassador for Dark and Lovely hair care welcomed the crowd of attendees with a video message stating her excitement to be part of the hair care brand.

“I am thrilled to be able to help Dark and Lovely celebrate their 45th anniversary and I am so excited to be the newest brand ambassador. “I grew up using Dark and Lovely products and I’m so proud to be able to represent the brand as an ambassador. It is a privilege to celebrate this significant milestone during Black History Month.”

After Demetria’s wonderful performance, we journeyed through the influential African-American hairstyles of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s; from afros and finger waves to braids, and flowing layers, each highlighting an essential Dark and Lovely hair care product. Fun fact about the iconic brand – did you know Dark and Lovely was introduced as the first hair color product formulated specifically for African American women? The brand has, of course, expanded to a wide range of deep conditioning treatments, shampoos, fade-resistant hair colors, relaxers, styling products, and a full line of products specifically designed for naturally curly hair.

Making their debut at the event were two new collections: Dark and Lovely Color-Gloss Ultra Radiant Color Crème, a no-ammonia natural-looking hair color infused with Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Pomegranate, that gives natural looking color, while delivering a glossy shine; the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Clumping Curl Clay Cleanser, and Clumping Curl Crème Gel, a care and styling duo formulated with Coconut Oil and Argan Oil, to help define naturally curly hair and reduce frizz.

The Dark and Lovely hair care event was capped off with the brand awarding five wonderful students with scholarships totaling $10,000 and assigned them to be mentored by L’Oréal USA senior-level executives as part of the Young Women with a Purpose Project, in partnership with The Tom Joyner Foundation. Scholarship winners include Ashani Scales of Delaware State University, Renea Young of Mississippi Valley State University, Hollye Weekes of Wiley College, Kimberly Burton, and Cherise McAdoo of Hampton University.

Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Moisture L.O.C.: Inspired by Naturalistas, Refined by Dark and Lovely

I received complimentary samples of the fabulous trio of Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Moisture L.O.C.: the Super Quench Leave-In Spray, Soak It Up Oil Cocktail, and Lock It In Sealing Cream, and decided to give it a try. I have been rocking my natural hair for almost four years now and have been using the L.O.C (liquid/leave-in, oil, cream) method for over three years, and I love it. For those of you who are curious about my hair type…my hair is mostly 4b all over, except for the back, which is 4a, but the L.O.C method works for all curly hair textures, so whether you’re 4a or 4b, it will definitely work for you.

When I received Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Moisture L.O.C., samples in the mail, I couldn’t wait to try them!! This trio left my hair soft and very well moisturized. For just $9.99 each, these products are a steal! A little definitely goes a LONG way! I have very thick, long hair, and I only needed a dime size of each product on each section of my hair. Thank you Dark and Lovely, you’ve made my hair styling experience so much easier with this impressive trio of hair products. The Dark and Lovely Au Naturale L.O.C. Collection has become my new staple, and it’s certain to be yours too.
