Cocktails and Corpses: Sauza Tequila Day of The Dead Cocktails

It was a dark and stormy night and the wind was howling like the banshees. It was four years to the day that they found the twisted bodies of party guests that were too crocked to go home, all asleep in the living room, the staircase and a peculiar guest cradled in the kitchen sink. Your Halloween may come with your fair share of stories, but what’s essential to making any party a memorable one is a glass, a carafe, a pitcher or a bottle or two of Sauza Tequila. Tonight we dish on the most important part of any adult’s spooky night festivities, the Sauza Tequila Day of The Dead cocktails.

People turning into cosmopolitan examples of inebriated zombies in last minute costumes that channel their inner desire to be a garden hoe, bloodsucking vampire or a giant chocolate chip cookie could make for interesting stories, however, our inner foodie much prefers the menu over the masquerade.

We’d rather listen to the stories of others at this time of year, not so much in the spirit of Halloween, but rather in the spirit of the Day of The Dead. The lesser known, but way more maturely macabre, Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of the loved ones that are gone. The holiday consists of dinners, gatherings, memorials and a newly formed parade in Mexico City.  Marigolds, ornate skulls, costumes, food and drink and music all characterize components of this day in Mexico and the Southwestern United States.

So when we say we’d rather listen to the stories of others this day, we invited my fellow horror movie aficionados over to binge watch scary cult horror flicks and pay homage to the real Day of The Dead with a Weekend of the Dead.  With such an undertaking on tap, what soiree would be a soiree without the presence of tequila this or tequila that?  Luckily our dear friends at Sauza Tequila, experts at deliciously smooth 100% blue agave tequilas, offered up some free inspiration in the form of drink and wonderful decorations from Mikasa and Modern Alchemy to get the ball rolling.  So check out these three smooth Sauza Tequila Day of The Dead cocktails and arrangements that we tried out for our Day of The Dead Binge Fest:

Red, Red Rita Remix

Tart and sweet with a citrus kick and the wonderfully smooth taste of Sauza Silver

1 part Sauza Signature Blue Silver Tequila
1 part blood orange juice
1/2 part lime juice
1/2 part simple syrup
1 orange wedge
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker.  Shake and strain over ice (sugar-rimming the glass optional). Use a blood orange wedge during blood orange season but you can also let a regular orange wedge soak in blood red orange juice for a couple of hours and use that as a garnish.

Bewitching Berry

Refreshing with a balance of citrus, sweet and a nod to a peach tart

2 parts Sauza Signature Blue Silver Tequila
1/2 parts peach juice
1/2 parts blackberry puree (pint of blackberries into a food processor, strain and let set 24-48 hrs)
1/2 lemon juice
1 part simple syrup
1 peach slice
1 blackberry
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker.  Shake and strain over ice into a glass.  Garnish by skewering a fresh blackberry and a slice of peach.

Bloody Dusk

Slightly smoky seasoned with Sauza Reposado and equal touches tart & sweet with the pop of heat

2 parts Sauza Signature Blue Reposado Tequila
1 part blood orange juice
1 part simple syrup
blended pepper rim
ice cubes
orange peel
Add the ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Dip the rim of the glass into the pepper mixture of choice. (We used cayenne, black pepper, chili powder and crushed red pepper flake).  Shake ingredients and pour into glass.  Garnish with thin slices of orange peel.

These Sauza Tequila Day of The Dead cocktails are cool recipes that work well for a quiet frightening evening or that can be tweaked for a larger group of rabble rousers.  Just don’t drink till you start becoming the walking dead because we want you to be safe and stay enlightened this Day of The Dead and as always please remember to drink responsibly.

Trick or Drinks: Celebrating Halloween with Fun Cocktails

This is our favorite time of the year, and not just because our birthday is merely two days away….okay, maybe a little. We also love this time because we get to indulge in trying out creative Halloween cocktails. While we usually get to do this at home, we had the pleasure of enjoying two days of Halloween cocktail goodness with the wonderful Bar 52, located on the rooftop of the Hyatt Times Square Hotel, and Dina Rata Bar & Bistro at the Andaz Wall Street Hotel. Surrounded by wonderful city views and perfect mood lighting, we jumped right into celebrating Halloween with fun cocktails.

Bar 52 at the Hyatt Times Square Hotel

With the NYC skyline as in the background at the tallest rooftop in NYC, we enjoyed a wonderful assortment of delicious hors d’oeuvres and the following must-have cocktails- Slimer’s Revenge, The Corpse Reviver, and The Doctors Note. we’re usually very careful not to partake in too many Gin based cocktails, but we fell in love ith The Corpse Reviver and couldn’t help wanting more. Our second favorite was The Doctor’s Note, a cocktail we recommend for everyone. These Halloween concoctions were the perfect start to our tasting adventure. Dina Rata at the Andaz Wall Street Hotel

Nestled in the hustle and money-making bustle of Wall Street, we couldn’t wait to begin our second round of Halloween cocktail fun at the Dina Rata Bar & Bistro, located at Andaz Wall Street. On this night, we were treated to the Van Gogh, A Clockwork Orange, and Horny Devil (a fourth cocktail, The Redeye, is not pictured). Out of the three drinks we sampled, we loved the Van Gogh the most. This bright-hued drink, which reminded us of  the colors from The Day of the Dead, had a delightfully sweet taste that made it go down pretty quickly (making it a dangerously delicious cocktail….we highly recommend it). feast you eyes and hopefully tastebuds, on the cocktails below:

I left Dave, Darryl and Stephon at the parade and headed over to Fig & Olive (feeling very nice) to meet up with Kim for the Yelloween by Veuve Clicquot party with St. Tropez’s Best DJ, DJ Adrian (great music). I love, love, love Veuve Clicquot and I found out DJ Adrian’s done the aftershow parties for Puffy, Justin Timberlake, Stefano Gabbana, etc. (nice resume)

Anyway, as I said, I walked over, which gave me a chance to walk off a little bit of the alcohol. I arrived to no line and inside was throbbing with music………and pumpkins

and the Veuve Cliquot girls who passed around both champagne and masks (as I’d already had enough alcohol for three people, I chose a mask)

The crowd was very lively and was a very good mix of costumes, from scary to fun to sexy

We were sort of hanging out with/by the pregnant nun a bit. Infact Kim took some photos with the nun

She even met some random guy dressed as Dr. McDreamy (he could also be called Dr. Mc Sloshed)

Not only were we enjoying the music, we were enjoying Veuve Cliquot

and some wonderful hors d’oeuvres

from this wonderful guy (in the orange bandana) who kept on passing trays to us

Some of us (Kim) got to enjoy a glass of pilfered red wine (no more will be said about this). I’m not a fan of wine red, so I didn’t have any but my sights were set on something else

Anyway, by this time it was after midnight and officially my birthday. My wish of being manhandled by the SWAT guy did not come true…………bummer.

Happy Halloween!!

Oh my god, it’s Halloween (by the time you read this, it won’t be – it’ll actually be my birthday)

Anyway, the night started out with me meeting my friends Dave, Darryl and Stephon and head to the Halloween Parade in the village (the costumes are always amazing), then going on to meeting Kim at The Fig and Olive “Yelloween” Party (Zia and Angelique were not able to make it).

Anyway, off we go to look at the crazy costumes but first in honor of my birthday, stephon insisted on buying us celebratory drinks, first shots and then Cranberry/vodkas (later in the evening, I also had two Malibu Rum with Orange and Cranberry Juice drinks)

Now on to the costumes (and there were plenty)

But my favorite costumes of the night had to be these. Oh me, oh my

I didn’t stay too much longer after the parade ended, I still had to meet Kim at Fig and Olive, which thankfully wasn’t too far from where I was.

Happy Halloween Everyone
