Trick or Drinks: Celebrating Halloween with Fun Cocktails

This is our favorite time of the year, and not just because our birthday is merely two days away….okay, maybe a little. We also love this time because we get to indulge in trying out creative Halloween cocktails. While we usually get to do this at home, we had the pleasure of enjoying two days of Halloween cocktail goodness with the wonderful Bar 52, located on the rooftop of the Hyatt Times Square Hotel, and Dina Rata Bar & Bistro at the Andaz Wall Street Hotel. Surrounded by wonderful city views and perfect mood lighting, we jumped right into celebrating Halloween with fun cocktails.

Nail Your Halloween Mani with Deborah Lippmann

Who’s ready for Halloween? What will you rock on your nails? We may not know what our costume will be, but we certainly know what our nails will be dressed as. Thanks to Deborah Lippmann and her Limited Edition ROAR Fall 2015 Collection, we have found our spooktacular Halloween manicure.  This Halloween, dress your nails in Witches Claw or Howling Half Moon Mani:

Witches Claw:

  1. Begin with one coat of deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro base coat and let dry fully.
  2. Apply two thin coats of Respect over the entire nail, waiting 2 minutes to dry and capping the tips of the nail after each coat.
  3. Wait one hour for nails to fully dry. Then, cut low-tack blue painters tape into a triangle shape and place in the center of the nail. The triangle should be placed where the pointed tip is at the top edge of your nail and is wider at the base.
  4. Paint the exposed sides of your nail with Miss Independent, then carefully lift the painters tape – do not wait for Miss Independent to dry.
  5. Finish the look with deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro top coat.

Products Used:

  • deborah lippmann Gel Lab Pro Base and Top Coat (sold as a set) – $45.00

  3. While that dries, apply Ruby Red Slippers over the tip of your nail, gradually dragging the glitter down towards the middle of your nail to create a subtle gradient. Add a second swipe of Ruby Red Slippers just across the tips of your nails to create a more intense glitter ombre effect.

MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Glam to Ghoul for Halloween

Halloween is days away, and while we love seeing the creative costume ideas people come up with, nothing beats a reveler with outstanding makeup. We were lucky to preview some of the outstanding and creative Halloween makeup ideas at MAKE UP FOR EVER‘s Glam to Ghoul for Halloween event; we’re usually only treated to the brand’s amazing work at the Makeup Show NYC. The talented pro makeup artists from MAKE UP FOR EVER showed us how to create classic glamorous, and wonderfully ghoulish beauty looks for this Halloween using the brand’s most popular makeup products….. and the results are amazing. With all three Halloween beauty looks being so drop dead gorgeous (no pun intended), it begs the question, will your makeup be glam, or ghoul this Halloween?

The three looks were achieved using MAKE UP FOR EVER‘s Step 1 Skin Equalizer, specially designed primers that target and perfect all skin types, skin tones, and textures; Aqua Black Waterproof Creamy Eyeshadow pot, Artist Plexi-Gloss, a high-performing lip gloss with vivid color, incredible shine, and stay-on power; Artist Shadow, a collection of 210 highly pigmented eye shadows with incredible blendability, and intense even color payoff; Rouge Artist Intense, a show-stopping lipstick that boasts high pigmentation for dramatic, long-lasting color in just one stroke whether the color is natural or intense; Ultra HD Liquid Foundation, a lightweight, oil-free formula that provides medium coverage with a natural finish, and Ultra HD Stick Foundation, a fuller coverage foundation that leaves you with a flawless complexion that’s also ideal for touch ups and contouring; and Lash Show, a new line of 50 handmade Eyelashes (27 Natural and 23 Creative Impact False Eyelashes), designed for the easiest application to intensify eyes.

We were very happy to get up close and personal with these stunning looks, which included a Dark Mermaid, Cyborg, and Skeleton Queen…but don’t quote me on that. Check out some video close-ups of all three Glam to Ghoul look.

All the MAKE UP FOR EVER products are available now at Sephora,, and MAKE UP FOR EVER Boutiques. Happy Halloween!

The Revered Old, The Delicious New: Makar Glasgow Gin

Are you currently doing what I’m doing?  Are you begrudgingly going into the deep recesses of your closet to pull the Fall/Winter items to the forefront of your everyday rotation? Perhaps you can’t seem to let go of that favorite tank top or perfect sun-bleached khaki short but, let’s face it, Fall is here.  Now figure for a sec that you discovered buried behind your treasured summer linen suits and shirts, a delightful but surprisingly forgotten gem of an article of clothing that somehow became lost over the years.  For me, it was a pair of full cut trousers that my dad had made for me back in college.

Rendered by a pair of older masterful hands, my dad had made those trousers tons of times, but never in the fabric I brought to him. I picked out a crisp yet beautifully fluid Super 150’s taupe gray wool gaberdine.  Having only making these pants in thicker worsteds and twills, my dad and I arrived at a nice collaboration of the full cut I wanted, and I also got a lesson in a classic trouser cut in modern fabric.  The result was superb and my underlying lesson learned was that sometimes it’s better to have the knowledge and inspiration of an older learned hand to produce a combined great experience of modernity and a revered classic. That’s how I felt when sampling Makar Glasgow Gin.

Here we have a brand new, under a year old gin that’s elegant, refined, crisp and bottled beautifully. The Glasgow Distillery Company was inspired by one of Glasgow’s original distilleries founded in Dundashill, Scotland in 1770.  What Glasgow Distillery took for their Makar Glasgow Gin was the focus on an intense and sophisticated flavor profile through small batching and a recipe of key local ingredients to ensure a unique and modern taste experience achieved via the way of time-honored tradition.

The result?  Makar Glasgow Gin is a really great gin to cap off my official ‘Month of Gin’ series.  The melange of notes come together to create this juniper-led dry gin that is fresh and dare I say, sexy.  How can something taste sexy?  Well, take, for example, how I sampled this gin.  Simple, clean, over the rocks with just some orange zest.  When you taste a drink with an intricate flavor profile you have to pat attention to the subtleties.  That’s what makes it a sexy gin.  The subtleties are discreet, tease the taste buds and trigger synapses in the brain that case connections with the familiar and the pleasant as far as the notes go.  The citrus pop of the lemon peel, the herbal soothing of the angelica root & rosemary, the fragrant woodiness of the cassia bark and the coriander seeds and then the beautiful contradiction of the black pepper and licorice make a tantalizing and soothing cocktail.

Since I’m waxing a bit of nostalgia, I think I’ll slip on those handsome trousers and fix myself another drink.  Sleek, sexy and complex with nods to classic, cultivated and familiar; that’s the modern way to drink.  Makar Glasgow Gin is available now at your finer wine, spirit and liquor stores and here at bespoke, and as always, please remember to drink responsibly.

The Best Things in Life are Sweet: Happy National Liqueur Day

For the longest time it seems spirits have been getting all the love, we admit we’ve guilty of showcasing more spirits than liqueurs on the blog, even though we’re huge fans of the remarkably decadent concoctions, but luckily there’s National Liqueur Day, a day to celebrate these cocktail stars. What exactly are liqueurs? Liqueurs are sweet alcoholic beverages made from distilled spirits flavored with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers or nuts, and bottled with sweeteners (usually sugar or corn syrup). because of this, they are versatile and full of unique flavors that bring out the best qualities in light and dark spirits. In honor of National Liqueur Day, we’re sharing cocktail recipes made with Midori Melon Liqueur, a versatile liqueur that delivers a high-quality, melon taste, and DeKuyper Cordials, a range of flavorful liqueurs that includes Triple Sec, and fun flavors such as  Razzmatazz, Peachtree Schnapps, Blackberry Brandy, etc.

Spa Week Highlight: KUR SkinLab

Just in case you’ve forgotten to mark your calendars from our previous Countdown to Spa Week post, it is officially Spa Week. Naturally we took advantage of the $50 treatments and indulged in an amazingly decadent Fall Renewal Enzyme Peel Facial at the wonderful KUR SkinLab, an amazing skin care and wellness oasis in Midtown East, at 875 3rd Avenue, Suite M-101.

KUR SkinLab works on the belief that everyone’s skin is unique, and that skin treatments should be customized to provide the necessary nutrients your skin needs to be at its best. Whether you suffer from acne, depigmentation, sensitive skin, losing elasticity due to aging, or all of the above, their customized skin treatments use skin issue-specific products. As stated above, I visited the boutique spa to indulge in their Fall Renewal Enzyme Peel Facial, which can be applied with either Papaya or Pumpkin. On our visit, we went with pumpkin… is pumpkin everything season after all. Our facial started off with a gentle cleansing and extraction

Our exceptional skin care experience continued with the application of the Pumpkin enzyme peel, which we were told was excellent for our acne-prone skin. Please note that although we have very tough skin and hardly felt anything, this peel is made to go deep into the skin, so expect a heated, tingling or stronger sensation KUR_SkinLab_Spa_

The next step in the process was a soothing and cooling mask that felt divine, but as you will see, left me looking like some sort of sci-fi creature. The way my skin felt after this mask was amazing

As previously stated, KUR SkinLab uses products to fit your skin’s needs, as my issue is with acne and enlarged pores, I was introduced to their range of RCA Skincare products, like the below Acne Control Regimen, which were used on my skin during my facial. The range of skincare products are available for all skin types and you can create your own regimen according to your skin issues.

We invite you to take advantage of this wonderful new spa and treat yourself and your skin to a healthier life. You still have time to take advantage of their Spa Week deal, so what are you waiting for? KUR SkinLab’s current $50 Spa Week treatments include:
